Engine sound on 2013 JCW with N18 engine

Hi

Anyone with the new engine (from Sept 2012 production I think) care to comment on the engine noise?

Anyone compared to the previous engine?

Thanks!

Hi, I'm Greg.
I took delivery of my 2013 JCW HT in October.
You can view the specs in my sig.
I will say that I LOVE the sound of the exhaust! In sport mode it sounds like a race car! When you start it up, it has this beautiful little rumble. It sounds like you definitely have something under the hood.

The N18 engine sounds so much quieter and smoother than the N14 in my 2008 MCS. I mean when you stand in front of it and listen to the engine.

It's music to my ears every time I drive it!

Does that help?

Greg

I love the sound of my 2011 JCW so much too.
I always drive with one of the rear seats folded down cause you hear more of the sound in the car. I'm always hitting the gas and letting up just to hear that burble and pop :D

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback.

I have one with the N18 engine coming, and haven't heard that one - just the previous engine up to late 2012 production (N14?)

Anyone actually compared them>?

The Valvetronic technology from BMW really smoothes out the engine. In my N14 I felt like I could hear the valves clicking. This engine is just sooo smooth. Response is amazing too. Just linear power till redline. Congrats, you will love it!

Great looking MINI SuperGreg! Getting the same color, but with a black roof instead. About a month out before I can pick her up. I'll miss my 545i, but this is going to be a lot of fun!

I have to concur, I own an '09 MCS and have a 2013 loaner for the last few days, the new engine is definitely smoother and less coarse sounding than the N14.

In a VERY good way! Sounds tremendous from the inside. Not over bearing, you just hear the HP and the pops and burbles. Music to my ears! No drone like the JCW kit on my 2008 MCS. Just a powerful melody lol.

loud engine noise

I just test drove a 2013 JCW hardtop and the engine had very loud clickety clack noises other wise known as valve noise. Is this normal? Did the N14 engine make this sound as well?

Also, after I shut off the engine, I heard a clicking noise as I stood in front of the vehicle. It didn't sound like the fan, and the noise went away after a couple of minutes.
