JCW vs. non-JCW ratio
JCW vs. non-JCW ratio
I'm curious just how rare a JCW is. Of all the hardtops (only) on the road at any given time, how many will be a factory JCW? 1:10, 1:100, 1:200, etc?
But are all 500 of those hatchbacks or do they include all MINI models (ie: conv., coupe, countryman, etc., etc.)? If so, then the ratio of 1:56 would be more like 1:something higher (I'm bad at math).
How about this. Other than seeing a JCW hardtop at the dealer (new or a car in for service) or any JCW for that matter, I have seen less than 15 on the road in the last 4 years. And believe me I am looking.
According to this thread, only 1% of the total production (at least for 2009) was a factory JCW vehicle. That would make the ratio 1:100.
The "500 units per year" number, per the same thread, seems to include all models produced.

That's the number I was looking for. Thanks, everybody. Another interesting question. Can you just walk into a MINI dealership and buy a JCW in stock? I tried this at the dealership in Las Vegas last year and they said "Nobody stocks JCW's. They have to be special ordered. We just wait for a customer to come in and place the order." However, last month MINI of Murray (Utah) had the grand opening of their brand new dealership and had a JCW coupe on the showroom floor (it's still there, by the way). I'm wondering if this was just to have for the grand opening, or if dealerships actually do stock an occasional JCW without a prior customer order. Your thoughts?

Used JCW vehicles are a different story; those will routine show up in dealer stock.
Prestige MINI had mine in stock but it was ordered by someone else all loaded up and then their financing fell through. Back in the summer/fall of 2008 nobody wanted to buy a 40k+ MINI. It sat around until I picked it up. I got a nice deal on it too.
Same dealer has a black with red roof JCW coupe on their show room floor.

I bought mine in stock from MINI of Annapolis. I don't know the full story of the car other than it was manufactured on 06/10, I bought it at the end of 09/10, and I got a pretty good deal on it. When I started my test drive it had 3X miles on the odo from the one other test drive it went on, the rest of it's time at the dealer it sat in the showroom. It seems that at least one of the dealers here in the DC area has a JCW in stock at any point in time.
Lol....come to Southern California
I think I see more JCW's than non-JCW's....(ok maybe that's a stretch, but still...I can say with great certainty that I see at least a handful a week).
Whether or not your dealer stock's JCW's depends on what the market is like where you are. Here in OC, Crevier usually stocks JCW's...I think they have 4 in-stock currently, and even have 2 Goodwood's in stock.

Motorworks Mini (Bloomington,Mn) has 3 currently
Was there today. They have 10 JCW in stock. 4 Hardtop, 4 Coupes, 1 Convertible, 1 Clubman.
Wow. I imagine it depends on the local demand. If a dealer thinks they'll move fast, they will stock them. I imagine they don't deal much. The MSRP is probably what you pay, right?
The factory has been doing some crazy piece-mealing of the Aero kits (Bumpers: JCW Aero; Side skirts: Old ~2009 style Aero). They are two distinct styles and mix-matching them does not flow. I'm guessing corporate is getting rid of old stock parts by doing this, but wondering if they have the coordination/organization to continue it for the rest of the 2012 builds.
Looking for actual complete JCW Aero kits installed from factory on any the 2012 JCW Clubmans out there.
Thanks.

Been driving a JCW in Seattle for two years and am always on the lookout for JCWs. I've seen the same one twice at a Mini meets, and none on the road. A couple of times I've had other Mini drivers see me getting out of my murdered out black JCW in a parking lot and ask if mine is an S, when I've told them JCW they didn't seem to know what it is. I think to many Mini owners a Mini just a cute good MPG car that can haul a lot of groceries. I wonder what the ratio is for Minis that were special ordered to ones that were bought off the dealers lot?
I've seen, this is in the Iowa-Illinois-Missouri-Minnesota-Wisconsin area, I've seen about 5 legitimate JCW's. Two are in the CIMI club and are at some of our gatherings. There just aren't all that many factory JCW's around.
There's a thread somewhere here where contact was made with an auto industry organization in the UK that maintains statistics for auto exports from the UK. Data for 2009 was found, but I don't think anyone has made contact with the organization since for 2010 or 2011 data.
For 2009, 498 factory JCWs (total for the 3 models in 2009) were imported to the US, 67 to Canada and 33 to Mexico. Unfortunately there was no further info regarding breakdown by model. Best guess would be to apply the percentages from the general population for the 2009 model year. Based on that, of the 45,000+ MINIs imported in 2009, my Clubman is one of around 120 or so. I don't remember the percentages, just the outcome.
