How many JCW were made in 2009?

Just wondering if anyone knows (or knows how to find out) how many JCWs were built in 2009? In a city with tons of Minis, I've only seen one other on the road in the last couple of months.

Well I wondered about this too, so I asked Mini ([email protected] ). Here is their response:

It is MINI's policy not to release sales, production, and import figures for MINI models. I apologize if this causes any inconvenience. We trust you will understand our position on this matter
But I also had heard from my local Mini dealership rep that he thought there were 1600 built... but who knows?

seriously, can't be that many. Seems like only a certain number of JCW's are allocated to a dealership each month. The dealership i went to was only allowed 2 JCW's/month. Larger dealerships get more (obviously).

So it's not much. If the dealership doesn't sell the allocated JCW spot, the dealership creates their own set-up and sells it on their lot.

I read around 450

In the September 2008 issue of Modern Mini Magizine it says only 450 of the Factory JCW models will be produced for 2009. 1% of the total Mini production. There is only one other one I see in my area and it is owned by Red Bull. I,m sure they will make a lot more in 2010 but will they have the engines made in Germany or will they be massed produced in France. I guess we will wait and see what will happen.
Ronnie948

Engine on mine was produced in Germany

A few months back MotoringFile.com posted the BMW stats for the entire company. Unfortunately for MINIs it only listed Justas and Ss. They did not break out the JCW numbers. Weird...

And for the record, I have yet to see another JCW of any bodystyle. Then again, we're not far from the edge of the known Universe...

Yeah, I had heard the 1,600 figure somewhere too, but 450 would make these downright scarce. The other JCW that I saw was actually a clubman that was right in front of me, though I've also seen a few S's with aftermarket JCW badges.

On a different note, ronnie948, it was interesting to see the scan of your sticker. It prompted me to have a look at mine, and I noticed that they were somewhat different. Aside from the California environmental performance scorecard on mine, I wonder why the MPG estimates are slightly different? Mine's a convertible, but that should, in theory, make it slightly less efficient. Also, note that the smog scores are different, and that mine doesn't have any crash ratings - just rollover. Mine was built in August, 2009.

Could the difference in EPA estimates be an automatic-versus-manual transmission issue? (Can you get a JCW with an automatic?)

No, it must be something else; automatic transmissions aren't an option with JCWs.

I don't have a JCW, but I seem to remember 25/33 MPG was the EPA estimate when the car was first released.

Is there any way to tell the individual production numbers of our JCWs from the VIN? I understand they can tell all of the options from the VIN. But I didn't get the JCW VIN decoder ring with mine.

My window sticker is the same as Ronnie948, EXCEPT, my mileage has an average of 29mpg, which is higher than Ronnies, but my estimate fuel cost is $2,225 instead of $1,607. hmmm they must of know what kind of driver I was.

ALSO... instead of the standard smog emissions label, mine has an "Environmental Performance" Global Warming Score of 8 (out of 10 being cleanest) and a Smog Score of 4 (out of 10 being cleanest). The label states:
Vehicle emissions are the primary contributor to global warming and smog. Scores are based on the California Air Resources Board based on this vehicle's measured emissions.

haha you guys just made me get out my window sticker too.

my sticker is the same exact one as spinned. I'm guessing California does things differently. I wouldn't doubt they have their own EPA tests.

CARB, California Air Resources Board

It is a section of the California EPA...

I too would be interested to know, and then to also know how many Horizon Blue / Black factory JCW's were manufactured and sold in the USA. Sorta cool to think how unique it may be.

The EPA site only lists a 50 state 2009 JCW so Cali cars should be the same as the rest of the states. Maybe they re-evaluated the rating mid-year or even later than that.

No clue how you would pry production numbers for the US out of BMW or MINI USA.

This is the information that MINIUSA says they don't release to the public. Strange. Very Strange...

I guess Modern Mini was right

They said 1% of the total were Factory JCW's. That would be about 452. They are probably more correct then guessing.

Are you sure that the automatic was not available with JCWs? There is a Official Automatic Transmission Owners Club thread (post #59) that has two JCWs listed. I personally don't know but I've often wondered if they were available.

Those are Cooper S cars with a parts department package that consist of a canned tune ,jcw badges , overpriced mid pipeback and a airbox plus some type of offical paperwork stating that a canned tune,a badge and some other overpriced items have been installed on said cooper s .

Take 452 and break out the production numbers into the three classes along the same percentages as the rest of the MINI models:

280 Hardtop JCW
62 Convertible JCW
110 Clubman JCW

Also interesting to note the 16 percent production volume reduction across the entire Mini line, more in hardtop and convertible. Hopefully with reduced production volume and flat or slightly increased demand due to cash/clunkers, the balance in demand vs. supply remains favorable for us.

However, I'll quickly say that investment isn't why I bought this car. It's simply a blast to drive, and perfect for my driving profile. Also, the fantastic community of enthusiasts that is part of ownership is a major plus for me as well.

Cheers

No 2009 Factory convertables.

I'm pretty sure that the convertable Factory JCW is a 2010 model. The 2009 Model year only produced Hatchback & Clubman Factory built JCW's. I know that they sold the JCW verts in 2009 but I'm pretty sure they were 2010 model Mini's.

I bought my Factory JCW in October of 2008 but it is a 2009 Mini Cooper JCW. So the convertable factory JCW should not be counted in with the 2009's.

The 2009 Regular and "S" convertables are different Mini's then the 2008's were.

I don't know about that. Although not hard proof, I started looking at the MINIUSA website back in July of '09. I thought they still had '09's listed until late fall (October or November). And, the JCW Cabriolet was listed when I first went to the site. For some time they didn't have final fuel mileage numbers on the site for the '10's. The EPA had not finished the testing or something. For whatever reason, the final numbers were held up. I don't think that any cars could be sold until all was finalized.

Mine's a 2009 JCW convertible. While I bought it in December, it was actually built sometime in or before August. I have a "battery log form" dated August 25, 2009, and a dealer quality certification form dated September 14, 2009. They had it as a showroom model until I bought it a couple of months later. The real way to call it as a 2009, though is the fact that it's multi-function steering wheel came as a $250 option; they are standard on 2010s.
