I was told by MINI back in December that the VIN has no relationship to the number of JCWs built. Here is their reply.

"I'm sorry that you did not find the information provided helpful. As previously stated, it is MINI USA's policy not to release production figures. Your Vehicle Identification Number does not signify which number your vehicle was in 2009. Again, your production number is used for tracking and ordering purposes only. I apologize that I was not able to provide the sequential number of which your MINI was built."

Which is sort of funny because we see sales numbers all the time...

I think what this is telling us is that the almost 500 cars are sprinkled across the whole production year. I think you could use the VIN to tell if one car was maybe earlier than another, but that's about it.

Right, but sales numbers are not production numbers. If they released true production numbers, it would give far too much insight about how many cars are still sitting on the lot, unsold. From a marketing standpoint, that would be bad information to release.

I happen to live 15 minutes away from the North American headquarters of BMW/MINI in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. From time to time I drive through their campus to check out the cars and see if I can spot test mules.

I also live near Prestige MINI, White Plains MINI and Morristown MINI so there are quite a few MINIs driving around my area which is in the suburbs just north and west of NYC.

I very rarely see JCWs. I think I have seen about 4 or 5 on the road in the 16 months that I have had my car. So I drive over there one day on a Saturday afternoon. And what do you think is all over their campus?? At least 10 JCWs of all sorts, hardtops, Cabrios and Clubman. And this is on a Saturday when almost no one is at work.

Those cars must count as production cars. They are not registered. They are for BMW/MINI execs and employees. See where I am going with this. BMW has to have at least 10% of that 450 to 500 number just sitting around on their campus.

So who knows how many are on the road. I love the car. Its awesome and the fact that its so rare makes it even better.

Yes, it would be hard to reconcile production and sales numbers. Since they don't occur at the same time, there will always be ones in shipment and sitting somewhere; waiting. Seems like they would report either one, but not both. If you did both, it would beg the question as to what accounts for the difference.

Thanks,

There goes my futile attempt at accounting for all JCWs. Regardless, I'm glad I have mine, rare or not so rare.

A few more than that. The total number of JCWs imported into the US as 2009 models was 498. An additional 67 went to Canada and another 33 went to Mexico. There is another thread somewhere here with these numbers. Someone contacted the industry organization that tracks auto exports from the UK and that's what they got. Unfortunately that organization had no data on specific body shells. Anyway, going by the same proportions for US models, the number winds up in the low 120s.

I’ve not seen any data about that, but it would be difficult to track since they would be spread out over the entire country. You would need DMV data from all 50 states and DC. That’s a very different situation compared to knowing how many left the factory bound for the US.

By the way, check the Registry to see if the previous owner had the car added. If not, I can add it for you.

That was based on 452 cars. It will be somewhat more based on 498, close to 70…

The Registry is at:

Check the registry:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ry-v2-0-a.html

There appear to be lower and higher VIN numbers so I’m not sure i what you say is true. What are the last 5 digits?
