Look on your window sticker

chinarider,

I'm pretty sure your convertible is a 2010 if it is a "FACTORY MADE" JCW. Look on your window sticker and it will tell you the model year.

The updated convertibles came out in 2009 but I'm pretty sure they did not have a Factory Made JCW. What you may have is the dealer installed JCW package. Even so, It is still a great car.

Did I read on one of your posts you had the automatic transmission?

It's a 2009 factory JCW convertible. Attached is a snapshot of the sticker. It's not automatic.

When I was debating whether to buy this one, or order a 2010, the sales staff told me that aside from the multi-function steering wheel, the only other change between the two model years is that the aero kit is factory-installed on the 2010s. They also offered me a pretty good deal.

The irony in all this is that it gets back to my original question of wondering how many made it off the assembly line in 2009? I guess with its introduction in the spring and the 2010s coming out later in the year, the window of opportunity wasn't that great.

Wow, I think you got a rare car.

It sure is a 2009 Factory JCW. I'll bet they did not make very many at all. Way toooo cool. You need to post some pictures. It sounds like a good color. Do you have cruise control? Mine does not and I sure miss not having it. I may call my dealer and see if I can get it installed.

09 JCW Convertible

I too have an 09 JCW Convertible. It wasn't all that hard to find either. Although I live in PA. I bought mine from Mini of Manhattan. They had employee pricing and 1.9%. When I Compared it to the 2010 (price wise) I couldn't pass on the deal.

I searched on MINI USA for an 09 JCW Convertible and found five within 300 miles. I started searching around September. The manhattan dealer was the only one with a good deal. Lucky for me.

When I find my window sticker , I'll post it.

The originator of this thread has a 2009 JCW convertible. We got ours about a week apart at the same dealer in Towson, MD:

Forgot to add that the color of his JCW is so sweet. Depending on production numbers it may be a one of a kind!

Rare ""YES""

The first advertisements I seen for the JCW Factory Convertables was on a MC2 magizine back. I just pulled it out and it shows all three JCW's It did not say any date but was the Oct mag.

I must have had a real brain fart about all of the JCW factory convertables being 2010 models.

I'll bet that not too many 2009's were made before they started the 2010 model year. It sure would be nice to know. IFLYGA'S post with the chart says probably 62 were made if the 452 total JCW's made is the correct number.

Yep, I would say they are very rare indeed.

I took delivery of my 2009 Factory JCW Hardtop, Silver on Silver, on 16 November 2008. It has no JCW markings anywhere in under the bonnet so I guess it was among the earliest ones. It's a blast.

280 Hardtop JCW
62 Convertible JCW
110 Clubman JCW

These number seem to be right, I had no idea I had such a rare care. Shoot, that might take some of the fun out of it as now I have to treat her better.

I bought mine from MINI MANHATTAN too, which is a corporate owned dealership. Basically it's a show room in lobby of BMW of America Headquarters. I had no idea I was going to end up with the JCW convertible. I just wanted a mini convertible with heated leather seats, but after driving all the iterations, stick/auto non-s/s/jcw it was the JCW that sold me immediately. It's like mr. toad's wild ride all the time. I didn't get the leather seats (next time when I get a clubman or the new countryman it will be leather) but they are heated which I think is so necessary for riding topless year round. I was looking at 09's since last May but in Feb '10 they were offered at invoice at .09% interest -almost same as cash. I have a black '09 factory jcw convertible with the cold weather package, chrome details, rear fog lights, deluxe stereo, zenon, white turn signals, armrest, bluetooth ipod connections, adj steering wheel, and cruise control.

Funny thing was the my dealer suggested that a chocolate/chocolate leather lounge 09 non-s model was very collectible (I thought it drove like an economy rental car - no offense to anyone), but after reading this line it seems that I ended up with very rare and perhaps collectable model that's very fun to drive. I get many looks and comments on the street and I hardly drive it all. So glad to find others just as excited about the cars as I am.

I'm adding the chrome intake scoop and strut brace this friday unless I hear anything against these additions here??

Is it seriously possible that our '09 JCW convertibles had such low production numbers? I wonder how we can verify these figures?

If it is true (hey, even if it's not), we should start our own club, subgroup, thread, or whatever have you.

The funny thing about chocolate brown is that when my wife saw one on the street, she immediately wanted one. When we found out that you couldn't get it as a JCW cabrio, I had to veto the idea.

Chinarider, LOL, I think the chocolate brown looks like you know what... No offense anyone. I do however love the chocolate brown Lounge Leather Upholstery. I also like the black (which I have) and pretty much all the other colors even the weird yellow. I'd love a horizon blue JCW clubman or countryman. Anyway, so far I haven't seen another JCW convertible although obviously they are out there. I think the premium price makes it a rarity because with just 5k or so more you could step up to a bmw convertible or similar. It would be cool if there were only a few hundred 09's jcw wouldn't it???

Update on 2009 Production Numbers Research

I goooogled around a while and found "The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited" in the UK that collects production data for the UK automobile industry. Here's their website: www.smmt.co.uk

After an e-mail exchange with their Production and Export Data Coordinator, they told me the following:

"To answer your question, there were 498 JCW MINIs exported to the USA in 2009. A further 66 to Mexico and 32 to Canada."

I did ask if they can further divide those numbers into sub groups of Hard Top, Convertible, and Clubman...but no such luck.

So perhaps this is as much as we will find out but still, this appears to further validate the production range.

Note that there is nuance here...the response is for calendar year 2009 instead of model year 2009...but still, it does show the limited production numbers of factory JCW for North America.

BMW USA will publish their annual report to stakeholders next week, so there is a chance we can see more information from the manufacturer. Guess as I type, I realize I'm going geek on this. Oh well. FWIW.

After driving a silver 2001 corolla for 8+ years / 160K miles, and seeing on average... 6 of the same model year/ and 3 of the same color in the DC area every single day...it feels good and exciting to be unique

Motor on with happiness friends.

Randy

Thanks iflyga! Sounds about right since I've been checking out numerous dealer inventories on the websites since they came out while looking for the right car and most dealers only got a couple 09 jcw's. I've seen as many as 6 at a couple dealers but as few as none at others. JCW Clubman and Convertible seemed a little rarer.

I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for that. What they usually publish is date for Justa's and S's. One would assume that the JCW's are buried in with the S's.

It's conceivable that BMW would release sales data, but that doesn't necessarily indicate how many were built. I think short of maintaining a registry, we may never know.

Well, it sorta depends on how precise you want to get and how you "spin" it.

Just knowing that out of more than 45,000 MINI's imported into the USA in 2009, your car is one of a special production run with fewer than 500. That is amazing. Only a few exotic car owners can say that. There are more corvettes manufactured per year! And there are many other high-dollar domestic and import cars that cannot say that, I would hazard to guess.

The MINI GP of course is a smaller production run, but this works for me. So, I'll chose to look on the brighter side and conclude that it's rare indeed. Especially when I can funnel the rarity down to the body/roof color combination that I have. And, the convertibles & Clubmen are such potentially low numbers that the cool factor is very high even with the information gathered and posted in this thread.

I say congrats to us all. It's a small class that we should all be proud to be members of.

I'm curious if our Production numbers or VIN provide any answers to the main question. Mine ended in 105 & 442 respectively. I built and picked up my late August 2009. Anyone out there with numbers over 452?

My car was built in June or July (can't remember which) and its VIN would be 126. If there were almost 500 cars built for the year, I would be near the beginning and you would nearly at the end. But, in time it would be something less than 3 months. That would suggest that the production was concentrated in the middle of the year, but I don't think that is the case.

The story goes that somebody pre-ordered a fully loaded 09 JCW in the spring of 2008. By fully loaded I mean it was only missing Nav, PDC and HD radio. It also had the factory aero kit. It arrived at Prestige MINI on 7-14-08. So it was one of the first JCWs in the US. The person that ordered it was not able to get financing.

The car sat around until I picked it up on 11-29-08. After all how many people want a MINI with a sticker of $39,400 plus dealer installed driving lights, rubber mats front and rear plus a clear bra on the bonnet, front bumper and side view mirrors. That took the price up to $41,741. I paid $38k. So I got a sweet deal on a car that no one wanted. It did have 104 miles on it at delivery though.

My VIN ends in 167.

Maybe the last 4 digits of the VIN would be more useful? Mine would be 4126...
