Stumble during heavy low rpm accelleration?
You could do a quick OBD scan to see if there's any fault present...
But more likely it was the too low of RPM and the ECU trying to build boost through excessive fuel delivery.
It's something I would not be worried about unless you had the same instance again.

I was driving on the highway in traffic slowly... maybe 50km/hr in 3rd gear around 2,000rpm. Traffic cleared and I accelerated moderately heavily letting the turbo do it's work. At that point there were two quick stumbles (I would say "coughs") and maybe a bit of smoke from the exhaust. Immediately I had full power back and the car was normal for the remaining 50km of mixed driving.
Should I be worried?
I tried to re-create the issue but it hasn't re-occurred so far. I don't think it was bad gas, I had filled up and driven 300km already on the fuel at that point.

While I won't dispute the idea of bad gas, I have only purchased 93 octane from a high volume Mobil station and I have never come across a tank of bad fuel. I have about 12,000 miles on the car and experienced superknock once around 4,000 miles. Superknock occurs at high throttle angle low RPM and is easy enough to avoid by keeping your RPM's where the car likes them (above 2,200).
Bad gas is easy and very possible but I just think that's an easy answer. No codes were thrown though...so it's hard to say. When I experienced the superknock, there was no engine light but a recordable code that was read and cleared. Overall, I am surprised that so many cars experience this condition. Sort of disspointing considering this is cutting edge engine management/electronics.
I still say...give me a mechanical setup anyday

Louise is not a 2009 JCW but a highly modded 2007 JCW. Just dropped off Louise today for a similar problem. With the RMW tune I've been having problems with slow boosting at low RPM and then getting the 1/2 engine symbol. Never any stored codes. I would just reset the ECU and then drive around the problem; no heavy throttle at low RPM and ease into the throttle at high RPM.
I've replaced all sensors I can get to which included both O2, MAP, MAF and air inlet temp. I also replaced the diverter valve twice as the AUDI one sucked.
I've pressure checked the intake system, post turbo to the head, at 21 PSIg, for leaks and none.
I've also had the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) replace under warranty.
Over the past two weeks the problem has presented itself more often and now with the JCW tune. Now that it appears with the JCW tune the dealer can diagnose and fix it.
Putting this all to paper now makes me think it's a fuel problem, maybe the HPFP again.
It's a time of reckoning for this elusive gremlin.......
