Brake Dust buildup

Anyone else have any issue with massive break dust buildup on the 2009 JCW? I put 2600 miles on it since I picked it up 8 Apr. Had a ton of dust built up after 1,300 miles. I washed the car once last week, put another 1,300 miles on it and had a ton of dust again. Anyone else?

everyone else.

My clean rims last for 2 or 3 days tops, then they get covered in dust

Do these things bleed brake dust a lot or are we just braking too much/too hard?

BMW uses very soft brake pad material. Nothing you can do except replace the pads with an aftermarket low-dust version such as ceramic

I am either switching to matte black rims one day or buying ceramic pads. I love washing and polishing my car... but detailing my rims twice a week is a little ridiculous especially when they are stock rims and I feel no particular affinity towards them.

No asbestos or other hardening material in the brake pads makes them very dust producing as Sin_MINI mentioned. Ceramic would be the way to go when it is time to replace them.

I scrubbed the heck out of my wheels with simple green, made 'em sparkle, then waxed them within an inch of their lives. Now all it takes is a quick wipe down with a damp rag and they're good to go. Give it a try.

When the little alarm thingie goes off to tell me the pads are shot, ceramics will definately take their place.

The rims came clean, that was not a problem per se. The new JCW standard rims with larger discs make it harder to get in there without pulling the rims off. I'll switch to aftermarket ceramics when the pads go south on me.

I changed my pads after about 2 months of the OEM dusting crap. Never regretted it. Sold my used OEM pads later to someone who needed pads and wanted to stay OEM...

jsmith6: I will be getting EBC brake pads. They have various ceramic colours that offer different levels of performace. Here is the link:

I got some Wheel Armour in a Prima pack last summer and it appears to help a little with brake dust (it doesnt' stick as easily). Also, makes cleaning the wheels off a snap.

Wheel Armour eh? Nice. I will be looking into that this weekend. Hope I can buy it at Wal Mart, Partsource or Canadian tire! I live in a small town.

Took me a little longer to see the light, but when I switched to Hawk Ceramics, my OEM pads still had about 70% of the pads left on them.

Never regretting throwing away those OEM pads early. One of the best mods I've done on any of my MINIs. I don't even have to wipe my wheels between washing now, unless I go more than a week without a wash. Even then the layer of dust is barely noticeable and might be from the environment as much as from the brake pads.

anyone ever try a set of those caliper covers that go on under the rim that would block alot of dust getting on the outside of the wheel ? How long does a set of ceramics last and how much cleaner do they keep the wheels .I have black wheels and the brake dust looks bad on them too .

I wish EBC and Hawk would hurry and get the items out for the factory JCW. I know Carbotech's are available, but I had a horrible experience with them on another car I track......don't want to go there again....waiting patiently.......

Is Carbotech the only option right now in ceramic pads for the JCW? I am looking to change my OEM.

Greetings from Mexico.

In Carbotechs, the part numbers are:

Front: CTJCW09 - pick your compound
Rear: CT1309 - Again, pick your compound

Pad replacement

With Blimey's input, I have ordered and will soon install a set of CT 1521 Bobcats on my Clubbie S. I, too, am very, very tired of detailing the wheels too often!

I just replaced my rims with a lighter set of Konig Feathers....I couldn't stand spending so much time cleaning the rims. Its such a pain in the a$$. Now, I can reach in there and clean the backside of my rims if I wanted to (which I don't) It makes washing the car almost fun again.

You guys with the factory pads, keep the rims clean. Otherwise, the dust build up starts to etch the clear coat. In foul weather, its best to wash them frequently to keep the dust from dulling the finish. I didn't try waxing the rims but anything that keeps the dust from sticking is good.
