Unladen weight w/out sunroof?

The specs give the unladen weight of the '09 JCW hardtop at 2701 lbs.

Is that with or without the sunroof? I'm assuming it's with. How much weight is saved by not getting a sunroof (mine does not have one)? On my M3 sunroof delete amounted to about 40 lbs. of weight saving and an extra 1.5" of headroom.

Thats not my question. I'm not asking about getting a sunroof. I already have a JCW w/out a sunroof.

On the previous generation MINI, I've heard 80 lbs attributed to the Sunroof. That sounds a bit high but it is rather large. Only way to really know would be to find two cars otherwise indentical in spec to compare, I doubt the manufacturer's going to give an amount.

That might not be so far off. Isn't the MINI sunroof a lot larger then the BMW 3 series?

I would say in square inches, yes. BTW, the unladen weight listed in the specs is going to be for a base, unoptioned car.

OK. That was what I wondered, whether that included the sunroof or not. Apparently not. I think the rest of what I got adds some weight (convenience package, comfort access, armrest, heated leather/cloth seats)...I don't know, maybe 25 lbs. or so.

The weight listed in the owners manual (approximately 2700) is with EVERY available option. I've only heard rumors of how much the sunroof weighs - upwards of 100 lbs due to the additional support bracing required due to the large sunroof panel.

How do you know that (authoritative source)? Someone else claims the unladen weight is specified for a base model with no extra options. That makes more sense to me.

I can accept the sunroof adding 100 lbs.

My source for this is the owners manual that came with my 2009 JCW. If you read some of the information surrounding that table it mentions that all the listed weights are for a fully optioned car.

As far as the actual weight of the sunroof - I have no authoritative idea

You are indeed correct. Good catch. I missed that.

The sunroof is a heavy option. I imagine full leather is a bit heavier than cloth or cloth with leather. I can't think of any other options that add significant weight. Possibly, my JCW could be as light as 2600 lbs or so.

I am a big track guy and opted for the roof, I just think that it adds a more open feeling in the car. Plus the track time this car see will be nothing more than a DE day, I use the race cars for the serious time. I did have my guys tint the roof glass at 15%, looks great and no baking.

it sux when you're tall & have to sit way back. You need the sunroof to see those red lights when you're at the line that are high and close to your side of the intersection.

Sunroof Added Weight of 110.23 lbs

Sunroof adds 50kg...

Found off a website in UK about JCW springs -

http://www.genuinemini.co.uk/acatalo...6_782_728.html

"A sunroof weighs is approx an extra 50kg over standard so requires stiffer springs etc."

A set of 4 JCW Red Sports Lowering Springs to fit to your Mini R56.

We need to order these to chassis number and spec of vehicle as there are many different spring rates for different overall weights of car eg. A sunroof weighs is approx an extra 50kg over standard so requires stiffer springs etc.

The only option I didn't get on my JCW was the sunroof.

OXYBLUECOOP... Are you going to swap your 18" double spoke wheels over to the new JCW? In my opinion, your Cooper is one of the best looking cars on NAM. If I could have ordered my JCW any way that I wanted it, it would be Oxy Blue with a white roof, white bonnet stripes and mirrors, those wheels (lowered of course) and even the std cooper hood.

One thing to mention regarding the weight is that the sunroof is essentially the size of two normal sunroofs in other cars. So if it saved 40-50lbs in a normal car, 80-100 in the MINI sounds about right.

That said, I friggin love my sunroof.

Looks like a JCW could then be as light as around 2600 lbs. without a sunroof.

I had a sunroof in my '99 BMW 323i. It was an expensive option and broke a couple times. I had one in my 530i and never used it. I ordered my M3 without and loved it that way. I drove a demo JCW with a sunroof and hated it. I am glad my JCW doesn't have one. If I want an open top I'll get a roadster.

I don't care so much about the ability to open it as I do it being able to let light in. I've never had a car with one before and as a previous poster said, it really opens up the interior. <3 it.

Roadsters are silly to have around here (for a DD, at least) because they can really only be used from like May-Sept comfortably.

To each his own, though.

Here's a link to download the "Test Sheet" from Car&Driver's latest JCW *Clubman* test.

http://www.caranddriver.com/content/...operWorksC.pdf

They corner-weighed it (I had no idea they actually did that), and it came out to 2778lb, total.

I can't tell from the pictures if it has a sunroof or not, but knowing the Clubman weighs ~150-170lb (IIRC) more than the Hardtop, that would put a similarly-equipped JCW at ~2600lb.

I'm leaning towards this Clubman NOT having a sunroof, but maybe someone else can tell from the exterior pictures or even the interior picture (sunroof controls?) shown HERE.

I want to get my lightly-optioned no-sunroof Cooper on some scales to see what it weighs, now.

When I drove the JCW demo with sunroof in summer it was so blistering hot I couldn't stand it, and that was with it closed. There is no sunshade for it! It would require limo tint to tone it down to reasonable levels. No thanks.

BTW, here's a seemingly sunroofless '07 Cooper S that C&D says weighed 2622lb... http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...st+page-4.html (See the test sheet just below the "New Car Buying Guide" box.)

Again, it's a little hard to tell if there's a sunroof or not because of the black roof, but I don't see one, and they said it stickered for $23,900, so I'm thinking it doesn't have it.

Well, there is a mesh sunshade that you can pull over it.

I'm not sure if you didn't see it, or if you're your point is that the mesh one is not REALLY a sunshade... I just figured I'd mention it, either way.

I saw it and pulled it closed. For the typical clear hot summer day in St. Louis that I drove, it was totally worthless, and laughable.

You're right... they aren't that useful.

I just thought I'd mention it since I've seen people on here that have owned or ordered a sunroof car that didn't even know that the mesh covers were there.

That's one of the several reasons we didn't get it on our MINI. Black interior + never-fully-blocked sunroof + Florida = Bad
