F55/F56 Issue - Wheel Hub Bolt
Issue - Wheel Hub Bolt
Brought my F56-justa into the dealership yesterday to address an intermittent ticking/clunking noise when changing direction (forward to reverse, or reverse to forward) and they were able to identify that the noise was coming from a faulty wheel hub bolt. This is mildly unsettling as I'm not sure what would have happened if the issue would have gone unattended to. The part is being shipped from the UK today and will be installed tomorrow, but thought I'd get it out there just in case it ends up not being an isolated incident.
Is it bent, thread stripped, wrong size, ???
I'd like to know what the fault is.
Not sure how this would happen....As stated earlier, they either work or they don't. Doubt it's bent, tolerances are tight and it would not fit. I would ask for a more detailed explanation when you pick the car up....Good Luck!

She is supposed to be mended by tomorrow, I'll make sure to get a full description of the problem before I leave the dealership so I fully understand what went wrong. I'll let you all know as soon as I have more details.
Was it just one time ticking/clunking or a series of multiple noise?
Ask for the replaced (old, original) part.
Perhaps you/we can see the defect, and keep an eye out for the same malfunction.?
If it is warranty work they may not give you the part.
In CA you are entitled to the replaced part.

It only made 1-3 clicking noises as soon as you started letting up on the clutch to move forward or backward and then stopped, and was more noticeable when the wheel was not straight.
Yea, the bolt either works or it does not.
Here some diagrams, see which bolt it was. MINI has changed the axle drive section. Used to be a nut on the end of the axle / wheel hub connect pre F56. Now it looks like they went the VW way with the bolt in the center. Still has the bolts that holds the hub to the carrier.

Thank and let us know what the part number was.

Alright, here's the scoop...
Picked up the car yesterday evening and the repair seems to have solved the problem. From what the dealership explained, the hub bolt was improperly torqued from the factory. The bolt (#7 on the diagram) is a one time use bolt, so once they removed it to examine the bearing a replacement had to be ordered from the factory.
The service advisor said there have been no other reports of this issue with any other F56s so far, but I would not be surprised if there will be more occurrences given the factory cranks out so many cars per day.
I recall a few weeks before I took delivery of my car, my salesman made a comment that a woman who bought an F56 (I believe it was in NJ) had the front wheel come completely off the vehicle while driving. I'll be sure to be more proactive of any noises the suspension is making and have them addressed should it occur again. If you'd like, see the attached image of my work order with the PUMA reference number. Safe motoring everyone!

Thanks for the update. Did they give you the proper torque value?
