F55/F56 Oil change before 1,000mi
Oil change before 1,000mi
So Im 200mi from my 1000mi break in window (FINALLY!!), I was going to get my oil changed to get rid of the break-in oil because it just works out for me instead of getting it next week.
Any thoughts if I should keep the break-in oil in until next week?
Thanks in Advance

Does a week make a difference? I did mine at 1500, and given the admittedly small bits that were in it, I'd recommend it. Also, I doubt it has actual 'break-in' oil like M cars did a decade ago (AFAIK ///Ms don't even have that anymore).

I replaced my oil at 1200 last week when it went in for the bearing TSB
I've read a lot of the little pieces you mentioned so that is why I really wanted to get the oil out. You are probably right, 2-3 days wont matter.
I'm just excited to be able to get over 4K rpm in a few days
I think.
Ok great I just looked in my manual and say that thanks.
I emailed my salesman because I could have sworn he said 1000. Im sticking with the book for sure though.

I purchased my mini off the lot at the end of November. My computer says my first service is due in May ( the month it was built). I went ahead and booked an appointment on Monday for my break-in oil change. I currently have 3200k miles. I can count on one hand the amount of times I drove it hard. Did I wait too long???
It's a PITA thing. I plan to make the first change on my new engine between 1K and 1.2K miles... whichever is convenient. By then it should have created or shed the majority of the wear and tear bits and debris from break in.
My local Independent BMW mechanic will be changing the oil & performing inspections some of the time but I will use the Dealer the first oil service & for warranty work. I will be wanting to know which oil & filter they use as well.
By the way, is there a reset procedure for the oil service indicator on the dash...Similar to BMW's? I have a Peake Reset Tool for my Bimmers. I might want to get the reset tool since I might be changing my own oil at some point too (having a lift, that makes total sense)....just need to learn more about this JCW!
Btw, vetsvette, I'm happy for you with the new engine. That's a bummer needing a replacement on a new MINI. Good luck with it!
Cheers,
John
Not sure about the reset. I'm not messing with mine until after my warranty runs out (9/2019 or 75K miles). I'll still let them do it until I have 36K on it and I will make sure I document all changes until 75K. I'll do my own in between dealer mandated changes. I have a local guy that does all my oil changes for me on all my vehicles. I buy Mobil 1 at WW for $24 and in the Mini's case a factory filter and he charges me $12 labor. It's not worth jacking it up or driving to my Buddy's house to use his lift for that price.
I changed it at 1,200. The oil that came out was actually really clean. All the hype of bad oil, break in oil etc etc is a bit overrated IMO. I still do it on all my new cars but it isn't the 70's any longer.
Me too!.....I'm at 552 or so miles & when I get close to 1,000 miles as I drive more this spring I'll be making an appointment with my MINI Dealer for an oil & filter change...1st maintenance check since new.

I ended up getting mine changed at 927mi and I was able to watch the tech do it. He used a little screen to catch the oil and there were some metal pieces in the oil, not a lot, normal amount for a break-in period (techs words) so I was glad to get it changed.
Oil intervals
10,000 mile oil changes are nothing new. Porsche has been using synthetic oils for years and have had 10,000 miles oil change intervals since the late '70's. With these modern oils, you're wasting your money changing oil more often than 10,000 miles.
Worth a note changing the "break in " oil is not a reccomended service item. Don't expect it to be done free under your maintenance plan, and don't blame your dealer for not saying anything.
I supply oil and filter and labor cost is $12 at my shop.
5 Quart jug Mobil 1 at WW- $24.00
rebate from Mobil 1 - $12.00
OEM filter - $8.00
Labor - $12.00
Total cost OTD - $32.00 = cheap insurance and peace of mind.
