hello, I purchased my F55 a couple of months ago and now have 3000 miles. How often do you change the oil/filter.
thanks

I'm old school. First oil change with a brand new car around 1-3,000 miles. The rest every 5,000. Everyone has their own opinion on this and seldom are two the same.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and change my oil when the CBS tells me to. I'll let you know when my engine blows up.

The longer you want to keep the car the shorter the oil change interval should be. Mini turbo 5000 or less! Go find someone who goes by the mini interval and check out what the oil looks like at 10k. They might think you are weird for wanting to look that is the only downside.

9K miles or 1 year is what MINI recommends.

Yeah, they started out recommending 15K on the R56 too. Look what that got them.

I agree with Vetsvette.

Here in S.E. Asia, where 90% of driving is start/stop traffic, short distance trip, and bad gasoline quality, the official mini interval is 8000km/5000 miles. Which means Mini/BMW is aware that a universal 15K miles interval might cause problems. Hence they now have different interval for different regions in the world, depending on the severity of the usage, climate, etc.

So if Mini USA recommends 9-10K miles, I would change the oil every 5K miles which is right in the middle of the free oil service.

If I'm not mistaken, the new BMW/Mini oil is Shell/Penzoill Platinum PurePlus with the new GTL base (Group 3), which is a good oil. Should be plenty of TBN cushion for 5000-7500 miles interval. But again, why not do your own oil change in the middle of the free service just to be on the safe side.

Am I correct in assuming that Mobil 1 0W40 is good for the F series also? I have a half dozen 5 quart jugs that I plan to use in mine eventually.

You're getting a lot of recommendations to change the oil/filter more often than MINI recommends. The recommendation is based upon what their dads did in the 1960s. No one has offered any proof that the shorter oil/filter change recommendations are necessary.

If anyone has had their oil analyzed to support your recommended oil/filter change intervals, please publish.

I'm at 64k on my 2014 F56 and have had the oil changed when the service light comes on, about every 12k miles.

Recommendation is based upon visual inspection of oil from a turbocharged engine after 8K miles in my car. And having to replace gummed up Vanos solenoids. Mostly long highway drives and the longer intervals are probably better, but a lot of local short stop driving like I do results in sludge. Mini had higher intervals on the older engines and then had to back them down because of many issues.

Thanks. I couldn't find anything F series specific.

I just got my car back with a new motor. Oil Will be changed after 1K miles of break-in, and changed every 5K after that. The technician/mechanic that swapped my engines said he does the same thing. Even though Mini USA frowns on them saying that. As far as I'm concerned, the 10K figure just means they only have to supply three "free" oil changes for a new car. My '07 R56 went 130K before I traded it in. Oil was changed every 5K.... not counting the quart that was added between oil changes.
