Performance wise, just be aware none of them will net you more than 1-2 HP, maybe a little better response.
Sound wise, many of them will definitely up the sound factor and give you more of a "whoosh" when you get on the throttle.
I don't know of any "true" cold air intakes, most of these are just high flow intakes.
Off the top of my head:
- Cravenspeed
- NM Engineering
- GruppeM (carbon fiber, very cool, but $$$)
- Way Motor Works (basically just a cone filter with an adapter. Barebones, which = cheap, but since you gain nothing performance wise anyway, not a bad option)
No problem! I'm no expert, but I do know that with how tightly these are engineered, I don't want people to fall for promises of moar hp if you get a CAI or HFI. If it's for sound only, than there's cheaper options that will accomplish the same goal.
I had a VIP intake on my Countryman and was really happy with it. The instructions were ok, but the sound it made was so satisfying after it was installed!
As Sirius said, cold air intakes, or anything other than the factory setup isn't going to do much at all power wise. Except the chances of loosing low end torque.
Intakes don't do much to cars fitted with mass air flow sensors, if anything they'll confuse the MAF and can cause non linear acceleration and a "lag" at low RPM.
But for sound and looks they are a great mod, Cravens intake, NM, and the VIP setup are a nice look in the bay, but don't expect anything more than sound and a reusable filter on modern cars.
I just added a K&N drop in filter. It added a nice sound but its more subtle. You won't here it if you have your music turned up to much. But it was a good price and when I want to hear the car more I turn the music down anyways.
Otherwise NM eng. has three color options. Nice quality and easy install. You will increase the engine noise and have that feedback swoosh from the intake.
Request to AWE and Mishimoto: please publish IAT data. Comparison of IATs between stock airbox and your upcoming intake systems would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
