F56 - Snow Tires?

Hey all -

I did a search but either I'm bad at it (likely) or the information wasn't there.

I have a F56 S on order, should be arriving mid/late next month if all goes to plan. I'm trading in my R55 S, which has the 16" wheels/tires. I picked up a set of snow tires from a local that was selling his R56 in addition to the stock run-flats. I've run these snow tires for 2 seasons and they're in really great shape still.

My question is - I'm aware the R56 wheels won't fit the F56 due the change in lug patterns. But, I'm hoping to re-use the snow tires on the F56, and just pick up a set of wheels to fit, generic or MINI OEM.

My F56 will have 17" wheels/tires and the DDC suspension.

Will a set of 16" wheels fit the F56? Anything in particular detail wise I should know to make sure they fit with the DDC?

Thanks!

Yes, the tire sizes between generations are the same. 195/55-16, 205/45-17, and 205/40-18.

The F56 Cooper S comes standard with 16"s, so if you have 16" winter tires, you'll only need F56 16" wheels.

+1

Good luck with the winter this year. Stay warm and drive safe. I just moved to Cali from Boulder/Denver area and miss it, but will not be missing the snow this year!

Thanks Ryephile and Pelican - got a new set of 16" sparco rims in my garage from Tirerack. Getting the tires swapped over this week in prep for the F56 arriving in the next 2 weeks. Can't wait!

Do the 16" wheels and tires , that will be the best for pot holes and winter driving. Narrow tires also help.

Yep got 16" 195/55/16 Goodyear (not sure specifics at the moment) that I used on my R55, now a new set of 16" wheels + the new TPMS sensors for the F56.

Now I just need the car, which got off the boat this morning in CA.

Does anyone got their winter tires without the tpms sensors? I am about to get my winter tires but don't know if I REALLY need to buy the tpms sensors. Called three different dealerships and they all gave me different answers. So I want to know will the computer system on the car go crazy (with error messages display on the dash) without the tpms sensors or just the "tires pressure light" will be on? Thanks!

In Canada we don't have TPMS sensors, or we didn't in 2015. The car uses the rotation of the wheels to decide if a tire is flat.

If you look in the manual you will see these two entries, I'm pretty sure all the cars in Canada use FTM:

Tire Pressure Monitor TPM

"The system monitors tire inflation pressure in the four mounted tires. The system warns you if there is a significant loss of pressure in one or more tires. For this purpose, sensors in the tire valves measure the tire inflation pressure"

and

FTM Flat Tire Monitor

"The system does not measure the actual inflation pressure in the tires. It detects a tire inflation pressure loss by comparing the rotational speeds of the individual wheels while moving. In the event of a tire inflation pressure loss, the diameter and therefore the rotational speed of the corresponding wheel changes. This will be detected and reported as a flat tire."

You should be able to tell which system your car uses by looking at the menu.
1. Press MENU button.
2. "Vehicle Info"
3. "Vehicle status"
4. "Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)"
or it will show
4. "Flat Tire Monitor (FTM)"

If you do happen to have TPMS, other people have run their cars without the sensors. I'm not sure how their sanity held up. I remember them saying the warning lights would come up when they started the car, and they would ignore them.

If your car has TPMS, I think it will have this code listed if you look at a VIN decoder, S2VBA. But ask MINI to be certain,

Thank you sooooo much!!! You are totally right! Your information is so helpful. I checked my computer and I do have the Flat Tire Monitor system instead of Tire Pressure Monitor System. I have been reading the user manual online (didn't realized that is the U.S. version instead Canada). That saved me couple hundred dollars!!

Yea, Canada has different regulations on the tire monitor system. In the US we have the inboard TPMS due to regulations. In Canada, the DRL turned on are mandatory I believe.
