Touch up paint nightmare

I had a small chip on my front right fender that I decided to tackle with touch up paint today. Big mistake. I was under the impression that the paint took a while to dry because the package said to wait 30 minutes before applying the clear coat, but as I was trying to feather it the paint started drying and globbing up and now it looks a million times worse than before I tried to touch it up. I'm in panic mode; I found this article on how to remove touch up paint and I'm going out to get these supplies right now: http://m.wikihow.com/Remove-Touch-Up...n-the-Car-Door

Any tips or warnings would be greatly appreciated.

Change of plans, I think I'm going to try this guy out. I feel like following the instructions in that article would make it 10 times worse.

i'm more scared of what you're going to do with that thing on a drill than the paint mistake.

maybe get some polishing compound and rub it off by hand with a microfiber?

I was able to use the little square of sandpaper (300 grit) in the kit and it looked 100 times better, but obviously i took off a lot of the clear coat. I painted over where I sanded with clear coat about 40 minutes ago. It just started raining - whenever it stops I'm going to buff that out. I'm almost positive it's going to look as good as new when I'm done. I'll post pictures. I'm not joking though - I thought my heart was going to stop when I realized what I had done at first.

I used ChipEx for touch up for my kite blue 2013 mcs. Very happy with the results and it was very easy to use.

It's good to know these things aren't the end of the world and that they can be fairly easily fixed. Thanks for posting!

Have you looked into Dr. Colorchip?

https://www.drcolorchip.com/

The guys on the Corvette forums swear by this stuff.

Just going by cars I have taken In trade or appraised or seen at auctions. From what I have seen I wouldn't put them on.

Looks good. Thanks for sharing.

I have to do my wife's. We got a rock chip in her "bonnet" on the way home from picking it up at the dealer. It really sucks and when it hit the windshield it sounded like it was blowing out the whole window.
I picked up the touch up paint this morning. Will have to try and do it tomorrow.

XPEL is very popular with guys on the Corvette forums. Most do only the trouble areas (quarters leading edge of the hood, Front bumpers, etc.,) while others have been known to do entire car.

Naturally you do not remove the XPEL as shown in the video, just wipe it off and use warm water to heal it. Removal is done to show underlying paint is undamaged.

I'm pretty sure I've read that stuff makes waxing/polishing very difficult. Maybe that's not exactly what the issue is, but I know I had a long read from a professional detailer who had nothing good to say about XPEL. Definitely something to do some google research on before using.

The dealer/installer provides you with a liquid conditioner to use on the film every few months. Basically, the same thing you would do to the rest of the painted surfaces on the car. Wipe on, wipe off. With a garage kept car that doesn't sit out in the sun, I expect it to last a long time.

A short video on Dr. Colorchip from the Corvette forum which I belong. As indicated, a deep chip will not be fixed 100%, but road rash all but vanished.

For deep chips only way to eliminate them completely is have it professionally fixed. Dr. Colorchip with a few applications (waiting 5 minutes or more between applications) can make them pretty un-noticable when looking at the car as a whole. Naturally if you start do a close inspection you can find he repairs.

Glad everything worked out for you. I wasn't as fortunate last year. I had a decent size chip on my hood and had a local repair shop (a good one) try to touch it up. Everything was going well until he tried to buff it out (a normal practice). In short time he went right through the clear and we had a real mess. I ended up having to have the entire hood repainted/re-striped (with more clear coat than factory does). I was VERY happy with the result. So it's all good!
