Cost of doing business. Mini and BMW notorious for brake dust. Nothing wrong just how it is.

There are some wheel ax product available to help keep it from sticking so easily therefore making washing it off easier. Some have gone to aftermarket pads

I wash my car about once a week so it never builds up.

It is what it is.

Yep. Change pads. I went with Akebono pads. Vendors here sell them but I found them on Amazon for half the price. $75 for a complete brake job. Les "bite" than the dirty stock pads but waaaaay less dust.

It is normal as the germans love to use a soft compound that gives good pedal feel and bite, with short stopping distances. The dust is the downside.

The Sonax wheel cleaner is great to keep them clean. If you get real serious you can later change the pads to the EBCs or Akebono which will be lower dust.

DO NOT WAX THE WHEELS! Wax will get hot and soften with brake use making the dust stick to the wax. It's late now. I know of a thread explaining how to use a couple of unseemly products to prevent the dust from sticking. Soon as I find it, I'll post it. Every brake pad leaves some dust, just a matter of degree but you don't want any of it sticking.

Get black rims. 😀 That's about the only way to not notice the brake dust.

I found it, it was in a PM I had saved.

"A cheap spray bottle of Rain X with any paint sealant will work better. They will both chemically bond to the rim and together. They will not break down from the high heat put off from your brakes and last and bead much longer. Plus they will repel water and dust better unlike Wax which grabs and holds it. "

"I also dislike brake dust on my silver wheels. I use BlackFire Wet Diamond on the inside barrels and the front faces. (Link below)

I do the whole set every year before I put them on for the season. (Spring/Summer) or (Fall/Winter)
Every few weeks when I wash the car and have the time I put another layer of RainX on them or just re apply the sealant since it so easy on and off.

I like BlackFire because you only need a little to apply a thin coat and a little goes a long way. I have done 5 cars and my wife's SUV and the bottle is still 90% full. It is so easy to remove it just wipes off and feels ultra slick but not oily. If you wax your car inside a garage you can apply it and remove it in 5 -10 min or leave it on overnight like I do. When I leave it on overnight it's because my arms are tired of cleaning. It still wipes off just as easy the next morning. I seal the whole car at once and then wipe it off that day or the next.

Try it on you car you will be surprised when you rinse off your car."

Wait, I thought they went with low dust pads on the F56? Is it only on my Non-S Cooper? I regularly go over a month without touching the wheels.

Black wheels, Mini brake dust = grey wheels in my case. Akebono cured that for the most part, makes cleaning far easier. Lots cheaper as well if you buy them right and self install or find indy mechanic at good shop rate.

I like the "non-S" theory - perhaps those pads are still the "old" type. The lack of dust on my silver MCS wheels has actually surprised me - it's barely noticeable and requires very little special attention.

my car only gets washed about once a month these days. sure they accumulate some dirt and dust, but not in the "wow those look filthy" kinda way. I wouldn't say they get dirtier and faster or slower than other cars I've had.

I also have a manual transmission and don't follow others close nor brake hard for stops.

No I'm saying I have a non-S and I don't ever see brake dust, at least not nearly to the point of my other MINIs/BMWs, which would be so severe after a couple of weeks the front wheels would be 10 shades darker than the rears.

I'm going to give the Blackfire spray a shot in combination with my Akenobo pads. Dust free 4 life!

My Justa is really low-dusting for a BMW. Just as good as my favorite low-dust Textar Ceramic Fusions.

If u do not mind a softer pedal, Akebono ceramic is the way to go for seemingly no dust.
It leaves a whitish powdery residue that is virtually invisible. Bam done!!

I could take a pic of my wheels today and you'd be hard pressed to see brake dust further away than 12" and I haven't washed the car in over 2 months. The wheels just look more matte than glossy. Even front to back you can't tell a difference.

Which makes me wonder about OP's case. It seems weird you'd be seeing a lot of brake dust.

I think it's weird you're not seeing a lot of dust. Perhaps you don't have stock pads.

Well, it could be that I changed the brake pads and am too ignorant to realize it, or it could be that this is the F56 forum and your R56 experience is irrelevant.

on my Justa, no brake dust. Not an issue. Even on my wife Coupe Black Mags, you still can see brake dust. Not as much as the silver mags.

Just my own opinion, I would be concerned to change brake pads, ie.Akebono pads, cuz if or should you have any issues with you brakes, discs, pads etc, and your car is under warranty, what is Mini going to do ? They will not warranty any issues outside of the Wear and Tare agreement because you are not using OEM part to certify you warranty. Wear and Tare items are not included granted, but if anything else is related because of those items, Mini/BMW will not be liable. If it was OEM part, they might be obliged to fix at n/c.

Just(a) my two cents.

I have the black wheels. Absolutely have never seen any sign of brake dust on them. I've had my '15 MCS since April of 2014.
