F55/F56 Gas Cap = Check Engine Light for a week???
Gas Cap = Check Engine Light for a week???
Dear Mini Friends,
My wife's 2015 4dr hardtop stopped to buy gas and the cap wasn't completely tight. The check engine light was on, went off, came on, went off and came on again over the next 5 trips. We ran a Diagnostic Check and all systems were "CHECK, OK!"..
This gas cap thing has me VERY frustrated. These Mini Computers have more horsepower than the first Space Shuttle on board, but yet they can't bother to pop up a message on the screen that says "EVERYTHING IS OK WITH YOUR CAR, BUT THE GAS CAP WAS LOOSE AND SO WE ARE ASKING YOU TO STOP AND TIGHTEN IT UP, THEN RESTART THE CAR AND WE'LL RE-RUN THE TEST, THEN WE WILL TURN OUT THE LIGHT IF IT'S OK".
So, this is the 2nd time we've gone to the dealer with this. It's INFURIATING.
When I was raised, a CEL comes on and you pull off the road IMMEDIATELY..
Thanks mini, for teaching us to ignore CEL, it'll go away eventually.. (not really, just angry)

Sorry to hear your issue.
I know the early models had the check gas cap light. Most of the time its just a bad seal on the gas cap itself or the internals. Usually if they just replace the whole cap , its fine. Make sure you insert it straight and turn and click.

To be fair, it does say on the cap to tighten until it clicks or the check engine light will go on.
But to your point, cars are smart enough nowadays, you would think they would tell you more about what the error is. Seems like on most cars these days, the check engine light can mean loose gas cap or your engine is about to explode...

Who cares. Those sponsors pay money to NAM to suggest parts/mods. He said a bad cap seal could possibly cause the OP's problem. What's your suggestion?
Wow - that is not at all how I see it. I see people asking for help with add-ons or broken bits, and ECS posting top-shelf advice and links to the parts they are mentioning. I enjoy reading their posts.
Have you ever bought anything from ECS? I bought JCW stripes for my F55 last month, when I got them I mistakenly thought they weren't the right part for my car. ECS was fantastic at getting me the installation instructions and making sure everything was right for me.
I find ECS to be a great contributor to this site.

They usually add some useful advice that's not entirely self-serving, so I like
seeing their posts.
You can always use them as a quick source for the part number and shop around
elsewhere if you don't like the price or shipping distance.

Seriously though, they always post relevant and useful information to the topic and posting part numbers can be very useful in the future for other members looking though the thread that may need that part.
