F55/F56 Screw MPG
Screw MPG
After enjoying my '15 F56S auto, and getting great mpg, I have decided to just enjoy the car and forget efficiency . Driving the car in manual, the engine loves to rev and the sounds are really nice. The guilt regarding worrying about mpg has left the planet.
Hallelujah, another disciple! I'll share with you my patented response to those who ask what mileage I get: "I don't care." (spoken with a big silly grin).
Compaired to the Chevy Silverado I had before this, im still winning with the mpg!

Amen, brother. If I cared about MPG, I'd buy a Toyota.
The sad truth is that those who do care and obsess about it just don't grok the Zen of Motoring and should be driving appliances instead.

If I cared about good gas mileage I would have bought something like a prius. I wanted a mini and this is number five counting the wife's. I even look past the "mini" issues that have come up over the past years.

The reason I got my first MINI was because if A) always liked small cars (the irony, my mother drives a Land Rover LR4, and I always have more stuff and people in my MINI's!) and B) I used to be a 'green, earth-loving child' and the MINI seemed plenty green! Then I test drove a Clubman S, it was heaven, and after that I've had two Clubman S and now an F56 S and NEVER, EVER have I cared about fuel economy, MPG since, I drive it like it's meant to be driven (my parents hate getting in my car with me!) and average about 25 mpg in my Clubbie. I must say however I have averaged a good 30-31 mpg nk my F56, even driving it like a teenager!
Speaking of hybrids has anyone looked at the BMW ActiveHybrid3?
AH3...25 city, 33 hwy. 0 to 60mph in 5.2 seconds. $50,150
335i...21 city, 32 hwy. 0 to 60mph in 5.1 seconds. $43,750
M235i.21 city, 32 hwy. 0 to 60mph in 4.6 seconds. $43,100

Interesting chart, hsauto. That raises a question: Somewhere between the 228i and the AH3, just where does a guy go from caring to not-caring? Looking at the cost/performance/economy figures, it doesn't look like adding the word hybrid really does much to improve any of those models one way or another. Porlandia 'get on the bandwagon' hype?
BMW sold 151 hybrids in the US last year. I suspect they are complying with California requirements in their own way. (They were big on fuel cells.)
Moving up that list I start caring at the M235i. If mpg was my major criteria only the bottom two on the list would interest me.
Even better, we have a 45mpg 2013 Jetta Hybrid for long trips. Cost $26.9 and matches the 320i acceleration. 7,756 have been sold in the US.
Our 2010 Prius got 56mpg but took over ten seconds to get to 60mph. 1.7 million Priuses have been sold in the US.

I am 2650 miles in and have stopped caring as well. After babying it and exploring Green Mode (which I still like sometimes, mostly to play around with the fish, who I have named Morris), I am using either full on Sport Mode, the paddles or move the shift lever over for better response/sounds from the motor.
SOOOO much more fun! And doing that, combined with the addition of the OEM roof rack and bike carrier, my MPG has changed from an avg 32mpg (in mixed driving) to 28.8mpg. Hardly an issue. I did get 36mpg on a trip to Vegas with 800 miles on the odometer and I thought that was pretty awesome.
My biggest adjustment has come from the fact that my last daily driven vehicle was a VW TDI - so I have gone from getting fuel every 3-4 weeks to getting fuel almost every week. It also doesn't help that the MINI has a tank that is 3 gallons smaller.
And I thought I had a problem… Am on MINI number 4 if we count my spouse's
I'm right there with you! I have the 6 speed manual and I quit caring about gas. I run sport 24/7. I normally shift in the 3-4k range doing 5k when im really on it. I do around 24 mpg with all city driving. Lots of roundabouts and lots of fun.

That’s the way to enjoy a car! I mean, why worry about something you can do little about? If you baby the thing and not really enjoy it, sure you can get a little better mileage. But what does that really save you in the long run? A few hundred a YEAR? So what? Enjoy the car and move on. I bought one of these for my wife and I find myself driving it as much as she does. It gets pretty dang good mileage no matter how you drive it.
