Old Y-cable and iPod Classic

Two questions:

1. Will the old iPod y-cable from my R60 work in a new F56?

2. What kind of functionality can I expect from an iPod classic in an F56? It's not supported by Mini Connected, but of course it's just a music device--no cellular signal. If I have the right cable, will I be able to control my music at all? Or am I stuck with an analog connection?

Don't know about the Y cable because I don't have an F56 but as I recall it's been said the new car doesn't require a Y cable, they can use the simple white Apple cable that connects the docking port to USB. An iPod classic can be played with a cheap male-male wire that connects the headphone jack to the Aux jack on the car or one that connects the dock on the bottom to the
Aux jack on the car (better because it bypasses the iPod's amp). That's what I did in my 2007 with no Mini Connected. You use the iPod to control what's playing not the car stereo.

I have a 14 Hardtop with the basic radio. The Y cable is no longer needed. All I do is plug in my lightning cable from iPhone to USB and all the phone music can be controlled thru the radio. Ie....playlist, artists, songs. Since its a basic display, you have to scroll alphabetically to get listen to what you want. Hey, it works. Try plugging in your 30 pin connector to USB and see what happens.

From your post and another one I'm guessing that any 3rd or 4th gen iPod are not compatible. IIRC that would be 30gb, 60gb and 80gb but don't quote me.

I was able to get a 5th generation to work with the USB.

Figure out your generation at Wikipedia

I've been working out this problem with a 3rd generation Classic. Mini says it only supports 4th and higher. I've ordered a PocketDock from SendStation, per hammerhands suggestion. I don't expect to have full functionality through the multimedia controls, but will have the best sound through the line out on the dock. I expect to have to control it through the iPod itself for now, until I spring for a new one. The Classics are recently discontinued, I'm trying to decide to ****** one up through Amazon or such, as Apple stopped selling them. I believe they have greater storage space than the iPod touch, and are great if all you want to do is download music files.

Mine's a 5G 60gb, around 2005-6, and I think they stopped selling the hard drive based iPods like mine, so the drive space has probably gone down (you could get a 160gb hard drive model at one time). The car's the only place I use it. I also have an iPod Touch, which has been in a drawer somewhere ever since I got it as a gift lol.
