Page 129 of the manual.

When I read this I thought, maybe I should have got that. Everyday I drive by this leaky petro-chemical storage.

Automatic recirculated-air control/recirculated-air mode

Page 131

You can respond to unpleasant odors or pollutants in the immediate environment by temporarily suspending the supply of outside air. The system then recirculates the air currently within the vehicle.

Press the button repeatedly to select an operating mode:

▷LEDs off: outside air flows in continuously.

▷Left LED on, automatic recirculated-air control: a sensor detects pollutants in the outside air and controls the shutoff automatically.

▷Right LED on, recirculated-air mode: the supply of outside air into the vehicle is permanently blocked.

Recirculated air mode switches off automatically at low external temperatures after a certain amount of time in order to window fogging. If windows are fogged over, switch off the recirculating mode and press the AUTO button. Make sure that air can flow onto the windshield.

Continuous recirculated-air mode The recirculated-air mode should not be used for an extended period of time, as the air quality inside the vehicle deteriorates steadily.◀

I asked my dealer about it for our worst problem: dust storms. I was told put it on M to shut out the inside air/keep pollutants out/only use the cabin air to recirculate if I got caught in a dust storm driving.

I think when it's on A, it'll try to detect if it needs to recirculate or not. M guarantees it recirculates.

On my past cars, I always manually switched between. As soon as I see a F-150 or similar truck or a junk car in front of me, I put it in recirculate mode. I even wish this button was part of the control buttons on the driver wheel for quick access.
I like your idea of easy access to recirculate function a lot! For those reasons plus the sewage treatment plant I have to drive by a couple of times a week. Phew. I also like Mini's time-limited recirculate. There's one member of my family (who shall remain nameless) that always forgets to put it back to Fresh.

I've had a few BMWs with the pollutant sensor. I have never ONCE seen any of them detect pollutants, no matter how rancid they were. IMO, it's completely useless and a waste of money. Example: following an ancient diesel "church bus" (good grief, it must have been from the '50s) belching blue smoke at road level through the entire Lincoln Tunnel. Pollution sensor didn't judge that to be sufficiently polluted to switch to recirculate.

I hope it's a misprint in the manual.
There are three modes, open, closed and detect.

Since I read this thread, and in particular [no pun intended] this line, I've been using the recirculate on my interim vehicle everyday, and whenever I get near a truck.

I don't know if it's the temperature or what, but the MINI turns off the recirculation a little fast, within 30 seconds. The truck is usually still right there.

I have two vestigial buttons on my very not loaded MINI's steering wheel I would love to use, or just let me turn off the recirculation myself.

That has the makings of a brilliant idea. Softkeys on the steering wheel. Programmable to whatever on/off/increment/decrement you want.

Having had it both ways, the auto climate control is one option that I'm glad I don't have on my new Mini. Doing it manually is easy and works great.

I don't have the auto-climate control, but recirculate still turns off automatically.

Hammerhands already pointed this out, but I just realized it myself that I left out the right column of the manual and left out the 3rd mode.

So, for there's actually three settings in this one button.
(1) No light - off. This means it's always outside air.
(2) Left 'A' is lit - Open. Automatically closes if the sensor detects something.
(3) Right 'M' is lit - Closed. However, this will shut off automatically at low external temperatures after some time to avoid fogging.

I still wish this button was mounted on the steering wheel. lol.
