ScanGauge II

Does anybody out there use a ScanGauge in their F56? I recently got mine back from a firmware update and put it in my MCS for the first time. Right now I have it displaying Water Temp, Intake Air Temp, Boost & Horsepower. I know other items are available to display, but you have to do some programming to get them on the screen. If anyone has experience with these "X-Gauges" as they're called, I'd like to open this thread to discussing them. I'd like to get Oil Temp or Oil Pressure as one of the four display items.

I don't believe Oil Temp or Pressure is available via the ODB port on our cars. I'm using the Garmin Mechanic with ecoRoute HD and a Nexus 7. It supports Oil Temp and Pressure if supplied through the port. I haven't been able to get it to work. I believe Oil Temp and Pressure are supplied by individual mechanical sensors that aren't installed in our cars. Not sure how we could integrate the sensors to obtain the information out of the ODB port. Hopefully someone knows more about this and can enlighten us.

The ScanGauge company says that OPrs & OTmp are available (along with a bunch of others) with special Mini specific firmware in the SCII, which means the information must be in the OBD data stream somewhere from our cars.

I was hoping we had a OBD guru somewhere in our midst that might shed some light on things. I'm just trying to learn how to manipulate the codes to extract data.

Battery Voltage is a standard one that's already one of the available options to display.

Good info. from ScanGuage, I haven't pushed the custom side of my application yet. Plenty of good stuff available except the Oil related twins by default.

An actual oil pressure value is not typically part of OBDII data. Reason being that an analog value is generally not needed in order for a motor to operate properly. It either has adequate oil pressure to actuate the VVT or it doesn't, which is why you might have an idiot light (reported by simple pressure switch....) instead of an analog value. Basically, the ECU doesn't need that information, so it's not part of OBDII reporting.

Scangauge might, for example, say they support oil pressure readings but if there is no analog sensor/sender, sending that data to the ECU, then it doesn't matter. Your best bet if you want an actual oil pressure reading might be to install an aftermarket guage. Hope this makes sense.

Frankly, I'd buy individual gauges for Water Temp and Oil Pressure in a heartbeat if there were a decent bracket available to mount them up by the speedo/tach. I've been told folks are working this issue but I've yet to see the brackets offered for sale. I already know which gauges I'm buying. But they won't be displacing the ScanGauge either. I'll just use other available functions on it.

I have the Cravenspeed phone mount (F56). They only really market it with the phone or GPS mount but the actual bracket that you mount to the back of the tach looks like it could easily be added-to with their gauge cups, various extension arms, splitters, etc.

I love the looks of their Gen2 mount and have been waiting patiently for the Gen 3 mount to arrive. They are the folks that said this bracket is in the works. I believe them, I just wish things could move faster!

I would be looking at the same thing, actual oil temp and pressure gauges while keeping the device operating off the OBD port. My NAV mount is Cravenspeed and it is very nice. Having the speedo off to mount the NAV bracket, sure looked like one could do a nice gauge mount using the same bracket. Waiting is always the hardest part, especially today when we expect everything to happen now.

Oil Pressure is Avail on the Scangauge II NOW

I'm happy to say we now have the new Scangauge II's with Oil pressure readout on them. We took one on MTTS and tried it on several MINIs. We found it will read oil pressure on 2011+ MINIs with N18 engine and F56 MINIs. So Way Motor Works is offering MINI preprogrammed Scangauges with the following gauges:

EOT - Engine Oil Temperature (Degrees Fahrenheit)
OPR - Engine Oil Pressure (PSI)
GAL - Fuel Tank Level (Gallons)
FLT - Fuel Temperature (Degrees Fahrenheit)
PSI - Fuel Rail Pressure (PSI)
FAN - Electric Fan (%)
A/F - Air To Fuel Ratio
TF1 - Transmission Fluid Temperature 1 (Degrees Fahrenheit)
TF2 - Transmission Fluid Temperature 2 (Degrees Fahrenheit)
TIS - Transmission Input Speed (RPM)
TOS - Transmission Output Speed (RPM)
TRQ - Actual Torque (ft-lbs)
