Gas Tank Size

Just filled up for the first time. Used Esso 93 octane. In Litres 42 cost around $64. My R56 used to cost around $80 so I hightail down to the dealer (around the corner from the station and ask what is going on.
The service advisor told me "In the S they shrunk the size of the tank from 50 litres to 44 to give more trunk space"! That's almost 2 gallons less!

But our cars are small and fairly fuel efficient, we do not need massive gas tanks.

Many other small size cars have 10 to 12 gallon tanks so this not our of the ordinary really; its just smaller than what the R56 had. Plus if this is part of what allows for our far more functional boot space I personally think it is worth it.

Think of the money savings Yes I think I read that somewhere - small tank/less weight/ improved economy. May have to buy that Ford F150 after all.

It's one reason I'm looking for a 2013 before considering a 2014. Even though the 2014 gets better gas mileage, it isn't enough to compensate a decrease in the range due to the smaller 11.6 gallon tank. I'm used to getting 500 miles per tank in my R56. It's a common complaint on the Countryman/Paceman too as they have a 12.4 gallon tank AND less mpg. Of course, you spend less on a fill up each time, but I'd rather fill up less and have longer range (within reason of course - no 16 gallon tanks here!).

I'm not getting the trunk space argument. I've looked under the car. The muffler alone is huge and isn't inline with the tail pipe like on the R56 - taking up valuable space under the car. If the F56 is a larger car, how could they make the gas tank smaller?? Also, this means that if they come out with a JCW or GP edition, it cannot use a diffuser like the current R56 and Coupes with JCW aero pkg.

From all the cars I have owned, most of the time it seems like the mpg and tank size are paired to get ~ 300-350 city and 450-500 highway. That's why a F-150 has a 360 gal tank and a MCS has a 11 gal tank. Subtracting off 2 gal is the equivalent to ~ 12 lbs in weight and ~ 0.26 cubic feet. That does not significantly impact the weight of the car or the size of the boot. There are other things in play here.

I just filled up at Mobil and got 9.37 gallons which means 30.2 MPG -- includes a couple of hours of interstate driving -- some at fairly high speed.

My gas "gauge" had 2 bars remaining, and if the MCS holds 11.6 gallons, I had 19+% left in the tank. The manual indicates 10.5 and 11.6 capacities, so I'm not sure if one is the Justa and the other the MCS.

MINI website lists both the Cooper and S as having 11.6 gallon gas tanks.

I knew I saw that 10.5 gal somewhere. On the mini website it read that both Justa and MCS has 11.6 tanks.

My old '11 Buick LaCrosse had an 15.7 gallon tank and averaged 21mpg = 329 miles per tank. My wife's Hyundai Azera has an 18.5 gallon tank and averages 22mpg as well = 407 miles per tank. My '14 MINI-S has an 11.6 gallon tank and has average 29mpg so far = 336 miles per tank. I'm really just fine with the MINI tank being a tad smaller, if that is the case.
