HUD + Polarized Sunglasses = blank display

When I deployed the HUD and had a blank display, I was like what the heck?? I took my POLARIZED glasses off and I could see the displayed data.

I have problems like this with some older LCD screens at gas pumps while wearing polarized sunglasses.

If you wear polarized lens, just realize that it will filter out the HUD display.

Yup, precisely why I didn't opt for the HUD

HA! Thats pretty funny. I'm not a fan of the HUD option, big lump on the dash when its not there really messes up the nice dash line IMO. All this is conjecture since I haven't even been in one with the option yet. Plus, I'm not exactly tall (5'6") and I don't need anything in my lower line of sight.

Related question-- how does the upgraded head unit fare with the polarized lenses?

Apparently, this is an issue across the board. I had no idea.

Problem solved. Got a new pair of Oakleys with non-polarized lens to keep in my MINI. Done!

Thanks for that info - makes it easier to decide if the HUD is worth it!

They don't work together.

I have a set of polarized sun glasses and it dins the HUD but I can still make it out. I'm ordering new lenses fir my Oakleys , easy fix. For what it is worth it is the one feature I constantly get comments on.

I am 5'6'' and have the HUD in my F56 and can see it very easily. You are able to adjust the height and position of the information reflecting on the glass so you can adjust it to suit how you sit in the car. I personally love the option and think it is a great addition. I believe these settings are also unique to the profiles associated to the fobs; so if you have multiple drivers the screen would always adjust accordingly for each person.

Best thing you can do I also forgot to mention you can also adjust the height of the seat itself up and down a bit so this can help dial it in too.

The HUD settings have a "rotation" option. Anybody know what it does? The manual doesn't say anything useful that I can find. It doesn't seem to make a difference.

It "slightly" shifts the image to the left or right. This is so you can tweak if you sit a bit off center in the seat.

The rotation actually rotates the info on the screen clockwise or counter clockwise. It is very slight.

I disagree. Polarized sunglasses are awesome at selectively cutting glare without having to make everything darker. It's unfortunate that they are incompatible with many electronic displays.

Puhleeze - so 70s is more like it. But I have an expensive pair of prescription driving glasses that are both photo-chromic and polarised that make driving my Roadster with the hood down a real pleasure.

I was trying to be nice lol. I rarely wear sunglasses, I have no idea what are polarized and what aren't now. Do they still make Foster Grants?

If you can't see the display with polarized sunglasses on, check this out:
turn your head +/- 90 degrees (i.e. horizontal) and the display will be plainly visible!

I don't recommend driving that way, however.

The same thing happens with camera and cell phone lcd displays.

I was trying to figure out the "rotation" option earlier today. In fact, I left a message for my dealer because I thought it was broken due to the fact that the almost imperceptible motion of the HUD whilst adjusting "rotation" made me think that some sort of transport screw was still left on the mechanism.

Now that I'm a bit relieved that this is normal, I'd like to know why this option even exists, especially since the effect is so slight?

Thanks!
