F56 - Any reports of carbon buildup?

Hi All,

I own an F56S, which I bought brand new and now has around 23K miles. I know I probably have a long way to go before I have any issues, but I was curious if any of you with higher mileage (50K +) had carbon buildup issues on the B48 engine? If so, how severe?

I see a lot of R56 threads about this, but haven't seen any for the F56, which is starting to make me think that the problem isn't as prevalent as it used to be. I know the F56 is a much newer model, but there has to be some high miler examples out there by now?

Thanks for your time!

Great question. My 2014 MCS has 38k on it. I have been thinking about running the spray sea foam kit on it. The kit attaches to the intake piping before the intake manifold.

I did get a loaner the other day that was new and performance does not seem different from that.

Thanks for the pics! Doesn't look bad at all for a DI engine @ 54K miles. Looks like BMW has done a good job minimizing coking.

Yes, looks like the Gen 3 engines are cleaner. Thanks for posting up.

subguy658, thanks for those pics. That is certainly encouraging.

Are you doing anything special to keep those valves so clean? Or, has BMW learned from their prior fiasco?

He put on 54K miles in 2 years. A high proportion of highway miles might be a factor.

LOL. My father used to call that blowing the stink out. That may well be a factor.

Hopefully you can read the quote I'm posting here. It's a copy & paste off my Kendal pad from email. I've been trying to find out this same question, but almost zero on the internet. I've contacted the nearest dealers and only one found out some info for me. This is the exact response I received Thursday:

"The intake manifold for the N14 and the the intake manifold for the B48 are two completely different set ups. The N14 uses the valve cover crankcase system to draw out the excess fumes from the engine which causes the pulling of old fumes which then causes a carbon build up in the N14. The B48 does not have the same crankcase set up in the valve cover and the fumes do not pull.. It has individual ports per cylinder to remove the fumes from the crankcase and does not have a collective diaphram like the N14 valve cover so it does not build up carbon on the valves. As for the second question, we have not seen any cars here at our dealership with that issue."

I'm trying to wrap my brain around the "individual ports per cylinder" concept she talked about. Maybe one of you guys who own one can help. I'm only doing my homework prior to my first Mini purchase.

Great pics. Question. It appears you didn't have the manifold off. Did you just go thru the throttle body?

This thread reminded me that I bought a $5 USB scope on ebay some time ago.. I'm going to check mine when I have time and find where I put the thing.
