Sunroof Forced Closure?

Hi all,

I’m about four months into owning a 2017 Clubman S All4 and have my first mechanical issue which I don’t entirely know how to fix. I appreciate any help.

In short, my sunroof won’t close. I tried to close it, there was a loud crack right before it shut, and now it is mostly stuck all the way open. Left to its devices, you can tell when activating the switch that it isn’t pulling on the driver side - either an obstruction, off the rails, or given the crack, maybe a guide is broken. I haven’t seen the internals.

I don’t have a lot of free time to work on the car or take it in, but I need the sunroof closed ASAP. I live in an area where rain is frequent and snow is imminent. Though I know it is likely inadvisable for the motor’s sake, I am able to push/pull on the driver side glass and the roof will close almost all the way, but at the point where it slides down, it forces itself all the way back open. Of course it does or I wouldn’t be here!

I’ve seen videos and tutorials for earlier, RX type models that have hand cranks. I haven’t seen anything for the F54, other than replacement parts. Owners manual is useless for the issue.

Help, please? TIA.

HI, It sounds like might have jumped the track. Given how new it is, I would at least take it by the dealership. It should be covered by warranty.

Exact same problem

I have a 2018 clubman S and just experienced the exact same problem. It’s jammed on the driver side but I am able to push it closed while holding down sunroof button. But once it gets all the way forward, it reverses about 4”. The back of the sunroof won’t drop down into position.
dis you ever figure out what was the matter? I just want to get it closed and don’t want to spend $2k. Thank you!

Hey there,

I ultimately followed the advice of the previous reply and took it in. It was indeed covered under warranty and they fixed it within a day or so. They replaced the motor on the sunroof, which fixed it, though it did seem to me that the motor was fine and it had simply jumped the track. Since the repair didn't cost me anything, I was fine with them doing more work than necessary, potentially.

Me too, all of it

Loud crack and then wouldn’t close, kept ‘bouncing’ back ~4”. Seems hung up on drivers side. Appointment on Monday to drop off to fix, mostly closed in the meantime and no precipitation forecast, but still wondering if you guys have any extra info?

For me it was a broken cable, luckily still under warranty, and the dealer fixed me right up.

Does anyone know if there is a diy fix ?
does the access to the rails come through the interior head liner ?

I removed the glass yesterday and there is no access that I could see to the drive mechanism.

I had this same issue with my F56, except both cables snapped. I was able to get it closed all the way to the vent position by pushing the switch to close it and then manually pulling the glass closed. To get it closed completely, I had to remove the front glass panel and push the piece that the glass mounts to on either side down so that it lays flat, and then I simply reinstalled the glass.

Same thing happened to my 2017 Clubman this weekend. Was closing the sunroof and then I heard a loud pop and now it won't open or close on the driver side. I had to manually push the driver's side sunroof to close it to the tilting position. I am guessing it is just the cable and won't need to replace the whole sunroof.

Same exact thing that happened to you all, happened to me — really hoping it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg to repair this.
Does anyone know what the cost of this kind of replacement, labor, and repair is?
