04 Sunroof will not open completely

I went to use my sunroof for the first time in a long time and when the sunroof was almost all of the way open, it jambed on the passenger and cocked. I thought I was going to be in a world of hurt but I was able to reverse the direction and get it closed.
On closer inspection, and after several attempts, the sunroof gets jambed at the same position every time. There doesn't seem to be any debris or material in the track area. I also tried some lubrication but no luck.

Upon reading the various threads out there, it seems that the only way to fix this is to replace the entire sunroof cartridge. Is that truly the only option? That is a very expensive repair.
Appreciate any comments.
Happy New Year everyone.
Ian

Going to move you to the Stock Problems/Issues area.

I had the same issue and was told by the dealer that the cartridge was the necessary repair (at $2300). I now consider my sunroof to be a fixed window.

Its jammed and damaged a tooth up by the motor. Pop the motor out and with a flat head pull the cables back. Those soak the crap out of the rails. Then work again both cables back with screw driver by hand. If that does not save it and the teeth are chewed up then it needs to be replaced. If you are luck the motor might have just skipped a tooth on the cables.

Where the motor connects. Picture of the R56 one buts its pretty much the same thing, just the R53/R50 has the glass with it.

Hmmm, I used to say that ECS was the go-to for anything to do with a convertible top, that can be applied toward sunroofs as well.

Thanks

I messed with my R56/ some R53 sunroofs for a while. Go to for everything, that's what happens when you own MINIs since 2004.
