'Ring run: pick a day
Fellas,
As more of us DEROS back to the States, we've gotta make some commemorative 'Ring runs. I'm sure that Loeches is ready (if he hasn't already) to do a run. Of course, it doesn't hurt to be on leave like I will for the next two weeks!!
So, here's the schedule for Green Hell:
http://www.nuerburgring.de/North-loop.361.0.html
Any takers? I would've suggested Hockenheim but it's too tame!!
Now, to be fair, I do have an order from CMS enroute (OCC and STB) but don't expect delivery before next weekend. Regardless, let's get together, do a run or four!!) and talk about MITA 09. Henry, Daflake: I'm sorry ya'll have (or will) move on before this can happen but this might be just the thing for you, 91Eunos!! Just one caveat: I will NOT say that it will be better than MITA08 because I'll be trying my hand at international planning!!
What say you?
Cheers!!

Count me....
Ah, crap.
I drove across South Carolina last night. Made on turn at the light leaving the restaurant, and another to turn onto post. Other than that, it was 75 mph and straight.
It was the Un-Ring. The Badschleife. The Nürburgblah.
You rigged a video camera to the head rest yet, Poppa Bear? You need to. Loesches has a mount, if nothing else.

NASCAR haters haven't avoided enough accidents right in front of you at 190mph.... or else you'd understand the skill level that these guys have.... and it's not all roundy-round racing.... they do road courses, too.....
It does take some level of skill to properly hit your marks every time for 800 corners in one race, drift the car at 170mph to within a couple of inches of the wall every time, and dodge spinning cars.... While I absolutely agree that there are other forms of racing (F1, rally, GrandAm, etc.) that exercise more all-around driving skills, and are more fun to watch, the reputation of NASCAR guys as no more skilled than the average autobahn driver is not based in fact.
The fact that a number of guys have crossed over both ways, and that success on the F1 or Indy circuit doesn't guarantee success on the NASCAR circuit (where much money can be made) would suggest that both types of racing require somewhat different skills.

Settle down BC, its just FUN I love the last sentence. No it is not based on fact just a personal opinion from a highly seasoned Autobahn runner. I just think in the world of motor racing a soap box derby with a few scrapped up elbows offers more excitement. NASCAR is just a raw and extremely unrefined sport. I think thats really the reason it has its stigma throughout the rest of the world.
I watched a documentry on NASCAR, it was most impressive. I think it was called Talladaga nights.

I used to think that too until I saw Jeff Gordon lead "Team America" on one of those race of champions deals a couple years ago where they drove rally cars, go karts, and a few other types of vehicles. That boy has some serious talent...led America to it's 1st-ever victory.
Conversely, JPM is doing ok in NASCAR now but the fact that he's not dominating speaks volumes to the level of the competition.
Don't get me wrong, I still can't stand to watch NASCAR (or even Indy Cars) for a whole race...in fact I have my son trained to say "Hey look dad, they're turning left!" every time it's on TV...but I have gained a large measure of respect for what they do.
Just my $.02

I'm weird... but the most interesting race I've watched in a while (and possibly the most interesting NASCAR race I've ever watched) was the fiasco at Indy a couple of weeks ago... when they were getting about 25 MILES per set of tires... worst Goodyear advertising ever... but it made for a really interesting race with pit strategy, disintegrating tires, a bunch of little 10 lap sprints between the competition yellows, etc... not what most of the fans wanted to see, but I thought it was perversely cool....

And, to be fair, it is exciting when they get three or four wide into and THROUGH the turns!!! And there aren't too many places to pass in the Euro version of racing, especially at Hockenheim or da 'Ring. That's when it gets boring to watch.
I think at that point most folks are just waiting (and wanting) for the carnage to happen.
Cheers!!
