Electrical Convert Stock Rally lights to turn on with Low beams
Convert Stock Rally lights to turn on with Low beams
I purchased the stock Rally Lights with my MINI. However, i would like them rewired so that when i push the on/off button for the rally lights so that they work while low beams are on. Right now they only work if the high beams are on. Yes i know this is to be legal, so spare me the lecture.
Best would be that I can turn them on/off regardless of having my low or high beams on independently.
i tried the search button and couldn't find what I was looking for.
thanks
alex

Here is a diagram that shows how fog lights are typically wired from the factory on cars

Here is a basic diagram showing how to wire a pair of fog lights with a relay. Basically, you could disconnect the wires near the fog lights, and just wire up this way. The relay is very common and can be found at any auto parts store.

I'm planning on installing fogs where the rally lights go.
(the difference is in the type of reflector)
I've read the factory directions for the OEM ralley lights.
There is a pdf on this place somewhere.
Here is what to do (there could be several ways). I'm speaking
in general you'll want to find somebody in person to help you out.
Get a fog/rally light install kit. I don't mean from MINI.
(or make one). You'll need power wire the same size
as the power wire you have now, as well as some smaller wire,
a switch and a relay and a fuse for the big wire.
You will be wiring the + of the current lights to I think
fuse 21 or F21 it is in the engine bay. I bet they are hooked in now.
I am not sure if you can use the current ground where they
are grounded my guess is yes. It might be possible to tap into
the wire you have, I don't know. I have not seen it in person.
Now, you will be connecting those wires to the relay.
Then the on off wires you run into the car through the firewall.
This you hook to your on off switch. I mean, indirectly.
One needs power, one needs ground.
You could use a couple of methods here.
+ to the current low beam switch I don't know how to do this.
+ to the lighter, which is only on if the car is on.
+ to the fusebox at a fuse you choose.
The lighter has worked well for my other applications because
all goes off when you turn the car off.
You then use the switch to turn the lights on and off.
But they will automatically go off if the car is off.
You might be able to get some instructions online.
You could buy a kit (fog light kit, rally light kit) at walmart
photocopy the directions and then return it.
I hope this helps.
