Speedometer signal wire?

I need to tap into my speedometer signal wire to finish the installation of my Defi gauge setup. Does anyone know the color of the speedo signal wire going into the double gauge cluster on the steering column (I have the oem nav unit)? Many thanks.

Cool sight.....but, no luck. Thanks, though. Further searches bring up a thread on Tyresmoke by Matt Richter where he says the VSS signal wire is yellow with a green stripe. Matt, can you corroborate this?

I'm surprised that it would have a dedicated "speedometer signal wire". I thought the instrument cluster is all-digital and reads everything from the CAN bus. The wiring diagrams in the WDS (linked above) seems to show this. The WDS does show a speed signal between the rear wheel speed sensor and the ABS module.

Whatever wire that carries the VSS (speed) signal should work, whether it goes to the instrument cluster or the OBD II port. I just need to know what color it is and I couldn't find that info in the WDS.

What I'm saying is that the speed value is a message transmitted on the CAN serial bus (along with other values such as temps, etc.) and it is not a separate signal. This would be true for both the instrument cluster and the OBD port. I think you should check if your gauge can read the speed off of the CAN bus.

Would the ability to read a specific signal be determined by the Pulse Value?

The wiring diagrams do show a green/yellow wire related to the speed sensing system. I don't know if this is the VSS you are looking for. It comes out of the ABS module (engine compartment near the right front strut) and goes to the Nav computer (under the seat) and to the headlight leveling module (behind the glovebox).

According to Dr Obnxs, "it runs from the passenger side rear wheel up to
the body control module and the nav system". Matt's been very helpful by e-mail over the last couple of hours. Looks like I will need a longer wire.
Thanks very much for your input, rkw. Sounds like you are talking about the same wire.

The easiest place to get to this wire is at connector X10186 here :-
http://www.mcaw.info/wds/mini/zi_images/G_236009.png
saves having to cut into your car harness.

This connector is shown in these instructions:-

Hi all

Before I use a tap connector to bring a signal to my Timewise rally computer I wonder if you might be able to confirm if I am considering the correct wire.

After pulling out the passenger inside lower molding I located a yellow-with-green wire that seemed to have some excess coming out of the main wiring bundle near the Body Control Module. Here is link to 3 photos I have taken:

http://gallery.me.com/bcwjarvis#100055

Schematics show "GE/GN" (ie a mostly YELLOW wire with a thin GREEN stripe) carrying signal from ABS sensors to X10186 module and then to ABS controller under the hood via a harness that runs along the lower passenger-side frame rail.

If any of you have a chance to reply ASAP I would greatly appreciate it! We're trying to get our last minutes details finished up before leaving for the 2009 Targa Newfoundland.

Best Regards,

Hi Brian,

that yellow+green wire does not look OE.

Connector X10186 does not connect to the Body Control Module, it is a seperate comb type connector, see attachment.
You can easily add a new wire to this connector.

Hope this helps and good luck in the event !

Cheers

Chris
