It is much more than a 2 whp loss.
Yeah I always had to slowdown for you 2 wheel types when I taught hpe events at the nurburgring.
2 wheels might be fast on the street but real performance machines always have 4 wheels, just ask any F1 driver.

the point is that 1-2hp (and I'd venture to say up to 5hp) is unnoticeable especially when it's just a street only dd! no need for e-p33n measuring here!
but since you're an expert... exactly how much horsepower am I losing here
? 20? 30? 50? oh and make sure to cite your sources and show me empirical data, please.oh and teaching events at nurburgring *on Gran Turismo* doesn't really count :P

Do you have multiple starts at spa 24 hours or nurburgring 24 hours? I would guess the answer is no.
Running a open element filter showed a 10 whp loss and 15 wtq loss on a dynojet.

I can google a list of qualifications, too. I know, it's the internet and you can be whoever you want to be...
Where is the chart? Where is the raw data you collected? What type of open filter element?
You're a professional so you know - dynamometer does not equal real world conditions, which is why they are only half of any testing phase. You cannot mimic a vehicle at speed correctly including air pressures and movement. How did you achieve your airflow?
Here's the thing, I'm not going to get into a "pissing contest" with you over this. It's a small decrease (which I still doubt to be as high as you claim) that I don't really care about because Mini Coopers aren't all that fast to begin with - and this is just my daily driver. I'm sure you have more snobby retorts and some more names to call, but I'm neither replying nor viewing this thread after this so I won't see them or waste my time replying.

Hey everyone. I know this DIY is for R56. But has anyone done this to a Clubman? I looked under the hood and it seems the same to R56. Can this DIY CAI be done on R55?
I ordered the K&N RX4990 from Pepboys yesterday and it should be here next week. If it can be done on my R55, then it will be my "weekend" project. If not, I will need to return it and it will be a very disappointed day for me~

I have owned my share of Sport bikes. Hayabusa, GSXR1000 all of them modified, lowered stretched, nitrous, lightened wheels, air box mods, exhaust, etc. I used to 1/4 mile drag race at Moroso Raceway. Now Palm Beach International Raceway. i did this for about six years. I have beaten many a dyno queen bikes that had more HP them my Bikes. Gearing, suspension combined with rider ability played a big factor. So dyno numbers are great for bragging in my opinion.
Here is my opinion of the homemade CAI.
The first Mod I did on My Mini was a Homemade CAI. I ran it for about a week before removing it and reinstalling my stock air box with a drop in K&N filter. I immediately notice a loss of power at the bottom end. My Mini was not as responsive and torquey! I like the cool blow off sound, but the loss of seat of the pants performance was very noticeable. My fuel economy also dropped about 1.5 miles per gallon. I agree with 2009R56JCW that the HP & TQ loss is very noticeable. I like 2009R56JCW also prefer performance then cosmetic, looks and sound. Mini engineers designed a great air box, that when traveling at high speeds will pressurize and make even more HP top end.
If you like the blow off sound, you should install a BOV. You can do a search on CAI and see that the two best performing air boxes are the stock and JCW.

My AEM DIY CIA
Well, ive been going back and forth on which brand to go with. I finally went with a AEM (dry) universal cone filter. And I couldnt be happier. I did some checking at the locale parts house and on Summitracing.com. They all wanted $38.00-$41.00, I didnt feel like paying that much so I did a search online again and found out that Amazon.com actually has the same filter for $21.26 and it was about $5.00 shipping to me. I really like this AEM (dry) filter. I know I wont have to worry about any oil getting anywhere and AEM and K&N did the development of this filter together.

Oh and I did a homemade noisemaker and intercooler muffler delete also. Now Im avg 2+mpg over what I was getting up on the highway with the cruise set at 79mph. Not sure if I just had a tail wind or my little Mini is breathing better. Only time will tell.

Ordered my filter via amazon.com.
Filter arrived yesterday and was installed in less than 30 minutes.
I love it. You can really hear the turbo spool up.
As you approach max rpm there is a whistle though.
I'm thinking it is just the air being pulled through the filter as you get close to redline.
You can also hear the pressure relief when you let off of the gas.
Just make sure you have long (18 inch) skinny zip ties.
The hose clamp is included.
I ended up using 3 zip ties. One to secure the filter to that grommet hole to the right.
One to tighten up the lower original grill intake tube to the upper intake tube..
And one to secure whatever that small hose is that comes from the firewall to the top of the engine block. It used to be held by a clamp on the 90 degree elbow on the lower intake tube. But when I turned it to face up the clamp is now out of place to hold that hose.
I have had muscle cars, ricers and now the mini. After blowing countless dollars on aftermarket bolt on's for a horsepower or two, this is way better than going with a $100+ cai. Same effect, just cheaper.

I went the K&N RX-4990.
My butt dyno doesn't notice any loss.
I love the sound from the turbo now. And the high pitch whistle when approaching redline I am now just going to consider it as an audible shift light.

i did this mod and love the sound... but a few days later i got a cel... the code was P115C fuel and air metering...
i'm not 100% sure if it has to do with the filter mod since a day before i had the valve cover replaced due to a vacuum leak.
i've read through most of this thread and no one seems to be running in to any cel problems...
my k&n is connected directly to the maf sensor right now... i was thinking of adding some piping between the filter and the maf to see if that would help the air flow for the maf sensor... but on some of the aftermarket intakes... i've seen the additional piping come after the maf sensor... and then on another it was before the maf sensor...

Me too. I just did a DIY cone filter, a 3" with an adpator to make it work on a 2.75 flange. Ran it for about 1/2 mile last night. Today I start it to put it in the garage and I got a CEL. There is probably a reason other intakes make that right angle bend and the filter is maybe 5" from the MAF. It's a shame because the sound is incredible. I will give it a week. If it doesn't clear up the stocker goes back on.

update:I removed the homade intake that I had put on Saturday. I konw I said I would give it a week but the loss of power and that pesky light was too much. It is a shame because it sounds awesome, exactly what I was going for. Anyway I put the stock JCW intake back on and instantly the check engine light was gone. I think the filter was just to close to the sensor to work. although it apparantly works on the MCS. Now I am wondering if I put the 2007 MAF on the 2009 JCW will that work? And without the restrictor plate what kind of power would it make?

So who actually has proof of a loss of power? It seems 50/50 on this whole damn thread but when it comes down to it. On the first few pages there was a legitimate dyno showing power gains with a hot air intake. So which is it. If you do a hot air intake and open up the scoop. I honestly doubt that If you pull up to a stop light. Stop for 15 seconds its going to turn the whole engine bay into a hot box. And while going down the highway your engine is honestly going to love you with all that fresh air going in there.
