Drivetrain exhaust question
exhaust question
I'm looking to get an OBX header and Invidia cat back but i don't want to chop into the OE header. So I am looking for dimentions on the cat. I want to buy a universal and weld on flanges, but i need to know the overall length to do that. If anyone has done it or know's someone who did and can give me the overall on the cat, It would be great.
Thanks,
Brian

How about an estimate is a cat 13" overall to short, or a larger cat 18" more the size needed. And no the 18" cat is larger in all respects not just longer pipes coming off of it. Only reason i'm asking is buying an $80 dynomax performance cat (13" length) and welding a $5 flang and O2 bung is much better than some of the alternatives i'm seeing.
With any luck you can find a stock header for about the same cost as an aftermarket cat. The OEM cat is very good quality. Cut up the new one and save your original in case you want to go back to stock.
What I did instead of spending alot of money on a cat-back system and header was the one-ball mod. Some people are against it but to me it is one of the best mods that I have done. For about $60.00 you take your car to an exhaust/ muffler shop and they do the mod for you. Some of these guys do not know what you are talking about, but once you explain it to them then they know exactly what to do. This mod produced the same exact numbers that I would have gotten from an expensive cat-back and header combo. Plus when you go this route you get to drop about 27 pounds from your vehicle. Hope this advice helps.

All that being said, the OEM cat can easily be welded back onto the OEM header should you decide to fix it. I think it's a waste to go with another cat, not to mention it's a LOT more likely to fail. I have a friend with a random tech cat on his MCS and it failed in no time :-\. The quality unfortunatly is just hit or miss.
Don't expect more than 1-2 HP from the one ball, surprisingly it doesn't do much to free up the exhaust. If you're planning to do a bunch of other mods, it's worthwhile to spend the money on a full blown exhaust.

I'm off to a meeting so I don't have time to look it up - sorry but do a search "obx header" and in previous threads actual model numbers of aftermarket cats are quoted.

I agree one-ball is a very nice improvement and cost effective.
I got my MCS done in a half hour for $53 and love the sound.
As I understand, it gives about the same performance as most cat-backs, but at 10% or less costs.
