Drivetrain Borla Street Quirk?
Borla Street Quirk?
Just recently I purchased and installed a Borla Street/Standard exhaust and when I first put it on, I loved the sound. However, recently I have started to hear a noise that I don't like so much. Around 2000 and 4500 rpms, there is a different noise from the throaty growl of the rest of the rpm band. It's really hard to describe but I guess i'll call it "tin can-ish." It's a high pitched noise that sounds like ricer exhausts (and I hate ricer exhausts). Any ideas on what this is? If it will eventually go away? If there is a way to fix it? Any help is welcome.
I had a similar sound around the same RPMs after I put my borla in. Found out I put the pipe from the cat to the Y splitter in upside down. Ooops. I would check that first. If mem serves you want the curve to be going down from the cat. I remember I thought I had it right the first time, but realized that the directions show the construction from the top down, not down up as how you see it when installed.
I have had my Borla on for about 40k+ miles now, and it still sounds almost the same as when I installed it (well after doing it correctly). The only change is the tone has gotten a bit deeper, and just a touch louder.

hmmm...from what I can tell, the y pipe makes a downward bend right in the correct spot, but i'm going to go check it again. I think that I installed it right.... And I'll have to look for a leak too...that's a possibility. Thanks for the input guys. Anyone else?
the borla street exhaust is incredibly quiet! there shouldn't be much sound from the exhaust at all! It should sound "similar" to the factory exhaust. Something is defenitely wrong if you have a ricey sound
I know something is wrong. When I first put it on, it was like you said...very similar to stock. I thought it sounded just plain beautiful and then 50 miles later it sounds like someone dumped a bunch of metal marbles in my exhaust pipe.
I don't know if this is the case, especially since it is new, but some Borla's (and Millteks as well) have been known to have defective silencers and the fiberlass inside them turns into beads. Might be worth looking into...

sounds like a baffle could have come loose...
If this is the case, would I be able to shake the muffler and hear a noise inside?
). Only the "aggresive" one includes a resonator. Sorry about the misinformation.I would have to agree with isellem, it probably is a loose baffle inside one (or both) of the mufflers. You should probably get a muffler shop to check it out, and if it is defective, talk to the supplier to get a replacement under warranty.
Good luck!

Alright...i've got a little sound clip for you. The first few seconds are how it sounds before it's warm (the part I love) and there's a five second silent gap and then comes the sounds I hate. They are not all one continuous recording but multiple ones spliced together.

Any ideas on what these sounds might be would be appreciated

I had a similar problem. When I rechecked my install I found that I small piece of heat shroud had goten bent during the first install and the hanger was bearly hitting it and it would make noise at certain rpms. so check out all your clearences for any problem spots.
I also moved my claps from where they were cause the bolts were hitting the battery skid plate when decelerating. I would check those out.
I listened to your sound clip and thats exactly what mine sounded like. I bet you just have something hitting at certain rpms. My was fine when we put it on then I drove about 25-30 miles and it started and got worse and worse as I drove more.
Sounds like that's it...it has gotten worse and worse for sure. I'm taking in to a local trusted mechanic tomorrow so we'll see exactly what it is (or where it's hitting) before too long.
The street, from my experience, is really the best system for me (when mine's not buzzing). The tone is deeper, maybe a little bit louder than stock, but it will really let you know it's there if you go wide open throttle.
