Airbox diverter

OK, here's Phase II of the RBH-DF scoop story! The new Air Box Diverter (ABD) adds to the RBH-DF scoop to direct the "unused" air to the Alta CAI airbox.
Photo 1: this shows the vertical splitter and opening of the ABD. It has to rise up and over the IC outlet clamps and around the endcap of the DFIC. Fortunately this lines up well with the airbox.

Photo 2: shows the diverter with Al clad thermal shielding. The only cutting was of the bonnet liner. The opening at bottom ( a little messy, sorry) matches up with the seal on the Alta airbox and simply dumps air into the airbox. Note the indentations for the DFIC (small at left side) and IC boot clamps (large in center). The airbox is approximately 4" wide and 1.5" tall on average.

Performance improvement? Yes, the ScooperPooper (aka butt) dyno seems to suggest a significant improvement in response. No measurements (still need to get some probes...)

cheers.

Nice work. I don't know if there is going to be an improvment on performance, but the intake will definitely use that cold air. I say 2 up

Sid: You're so right. We've had two requests for lists today:
1. Mod of the month
2. Nuttiest modders
Maybe we could make a list of lists? I offer up the first 2.

The diverter actually looks OK in person, especially with the bonnet closed! The view from the front of the car is cool, as the splitter is aero shaped and notched into the scoop. There is not much room under the bonnet, trust me! And I didn't want to do too much cutting if I could design it so.

Again, let me thank Peter from M7 for helping me out with the scoop for this project.

Yes, Peter sent me a PM this morning. I think he's busy at the Skunk Works making more stuff for our stuff... I am waiting on the new IC boots, the new diverter foam seals and something else...? I can't remember. I wonder how the IC exhaust scoop is going?

No worries I have been incredibly busy with new projects for future products. And Maxmini (Randy) and I spent this week at SEMA scouring the halls for cool future stuff.

Back to the airbox diverter...
I went for a short run yesterday afternoon and all I can say is: WOW!! This mod is totally amazing. I felt at least 20HP more, the flat spot ijust wasn't perceptible, the engine felt 5x more responsive, it's like a nitrous shot! Just knowing that more fresh, cold air is going to my intake made the car perform significantly better. There's no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

cheers,

That's impressive! Well done. So who's going to be the first brave soul to cut up their bonnet and mount a cold air scoop above the CAI? That would seem to me to be the next logical alternative. I think PARTSMAN was considering this idea.

Yes indeed, a true CAI for the Mini "S" car. Do I see "Mod Of The Month"....... At speed the scoop is the best solution for the air supply, it only makes good sence.

I am working on this. I met a very good carbon fiber/fiberglass guy at my work. He was there getting the emissions done on his MCS. He is shrinking me a bonnet scoop to about a five inch wide opening. I just don't know where it will go yet. We will be filling the drivers side area of the engine compartment with expanding foam to see what kind of room we have.

I know this is a bit risky, but how about a sticky, or equivalent, about optimizing the intake path? We seem to be gathering some momentum here:
Working backwards,
1. Intake manifold insulation using Al clad fiberglass wrap.
2. Intercooler -- many ideas here from modding the OEM IC to horizontal flow, to W2A ICs.
3. Intercooler diverters and seals
4. Intercooler exhaust vents
5. Hood scoops and ram intakes
6. The intake tube from filter to throttle body - pretty much settled with Alta silicone.
7. Intake filter
8. Air box. Metal top, seal to bonnet, open to cowl, insulation
9. Air box diverter to supply fresh air to airbox.
10. Airbox - OEM air supply from front above radiator, with or without water trap and noise suppression forms.
11. General heat evacuation using hood vents.
12. Fresh air scoop for CAI ???

There must be many entries under each topic?

cheers,

Actually lambspeed was going to do this a couple months ago but then he disappeared.

I smell a conspiracy

Good Idea. Air management has been discussed many times, for under hood temp control, IC, CAI and more......

You're right, he was all gung ho in this thread...
