Drivetrain Stealth Exhaust Anyone?
I like the loudness of the stock exhaust on the MCS. I would like to maximize HP gain without increasing loudness. I have distroyed my hearing enough via loud rock music, firearms, top fuel dragsters, etc... OK, I want my cake and eat it too! Any suggestions?
of the three ..major players out there.....magnaflow, borla & quicksilver
the consensus is that......
the quicksilver is the best compromise between hp gains and volume gains.
i had the magnaflow....it wasn't for me. great hp gains, and imho great volume ( droning h'way presence)
i ordered the qs a while back, should have it by early next week & installed by next saturday....
i'll be better able to give you my opinion...at that time
i'm hoping this is the one

minifinn,
An article I read about the 210 hp Hartge package for the MCS indicated that the biggest restriction in the stock exhaust system was the catalytic converter. If true, you might see reasonable HP gains without any change in tone/loudness by keeping the stock centerpipe/resonator/muffler system and installing one of the header/racing cat units like Randy at MCM sells (see the sponsor directory for his website). I know he's tested the header with a Magnaflow exhaust; don't know if he's tried it with a stock setup.
Randy, are you listening? Any thoughts?
PROMINI/SuperSprint also have a header/racing cat package, but I don't know if it will mount to a stock centerpipe. Of course as soon as you open up the cat, something else becomes the next biggest restriction.
By the way, the Hartge MCS package is basically supercharger and ECU mods. It pulls/pushes 210+ hp through totally stock intake/exhaust. So the stock system can't be that bad.
Cheers,
James

Ihave the QS and it's sweet. There is some sympathetic resonance that's occuring with the heatshield which is aluminum and vibrates setting up some boominess. At Randy's suggestion I went out to pegasusautoracing.com and ordered some adhesive heatproof cloth that I will either replace the aluminum with or cover it over as a sound deadner. The sound out the back is music!

d-mini-ero,
I look forward to your posts on the QS vs the Stock vs the Maganflow. I drive on the Interstate a lot and notice that at 3200 rpm anything "boomier" could be a drag after about 15 minutes. I value your opinion guys. Keep postin'

You'll love the sound of the QS! I heard it at Randy's mini-ware party and would say that it had the best sound (not loud) of them all!

But, did it sound good outside the car or inside the car? I could care less what it sounds like outside the car.
I have a hard time believing that any aftermarket exhaust doesn't drone because even the stock exhaust drones just a bit, especially in 6th on the freeway below 3000RPM; any louder, I'd expect the drone would only be worse.
Good luck with the Quicksilver d-mini-ero as I think you have an ear for exhausts that is very similar to mine. If you don't like it, I know I won't. I've pretty much resolved myself to sticking with the stock system even if I do the ECU + pulley.
I personally don't believe the exhaust makes much of a difference in HP. I believe Randy saw only a couple HP gain when the exhaust is added to the intake. I'd like to see the HP difference on Randy's car between the Magnaflow and stock now that he has all the other goodies on it. I bet the exhaust only makes 5HP and only at high RPMs. Randy, that is a challenge for you
We'll see...

Sleepless,
I agree with all of the above except the power made by the exhaust. I have an intake and it helped but the Magnaflow exhaust makes much more. Admittedly I only have my butt dyno for this observation. However, no matter what someones dyno numbers say, the feel I get from the car is all the judgement that counts. I don't feel anything from numbers. I have ordered the Quicksilver as well and feel that d-mini-ero has the same feel for loudness that I do. He took off his Magnaflow and returned to stock but he still wants the extra power -- with a reasonable sound level --the same way I do. I like the sound of the Magnaflow most of the time. But not the droning. I totally agree that the droning is inherent to the stock system as well, and at the same rpm levels. It is a matter of personal taste what works loudness wise for each person but I have no doubt that noticable power is made from quality exhaust systems.
