and again..the point would be for all the people in cali to have the system on their car legally...
not quite that easy because now you are loading down the engine with two mufflers and that will change the performance..... look at the Borla street vs race and you will see the big diff is the size of the mufflers... the muffler in the WMS sys is quite large and has been the reason why the system has taken so long trying to get good performance with one muffler keeping the noise down on a 3" system....... it has proven to be a bit more than originally thought .... the good news is that through a lot of work and R&D by Randy and his design team it all turned out...... I think you will all be impressed.....

Agreed.
Add to that you'd have to, or the manufacturer would have to, build a new jig or partial jig to hold the new components in place.
Even if this is a CAM built exhaust system you have to program the new parameters. You'd have new inlet and oulet pipe changes at the very least.

I've worked in the auto manufacturing business(Valeo automotive) in the past. The smallest change is costly.

Basically, people in California may want/need to have the driver's side of the exhaust cut off and a custom bend fabricated for the exit/tips. It shouldn't be a problem, but if you are cited somehow for having a cutout, then you would need to remove the exhaust or modify it.

SpiderX - Wouldn't there still be more flow/power (than the closed position) with two mufflers?

...or find a way to register the car out of CA, I think a vacation home at the end of a long set of twisties would be the perfect mod for the MINI, just find it in a state that allows by-passes.

Since it's a 3" system [and the only one...], there shouold be more power in this exhaust, even if the mufflers have equivalent restriction to flow.

That depends on the resistance of the muffler/system...... there certainly could be but then we get back to more R&D costs to "get it right" .... think of speakers... you don't just throw a speaker in a box and expect it to sound good..... the speaker has properties.... that interact with the dimensions and even the materials of the box...... add in a port for tuning and you have some engineering to do to get it right....... can be far more complicated but the exhaust has similar principles to follow..... I know a lot more about speakers than exhaust but I think the analogy holds up

I dont understand how the cut-out is going to be an issue. If the block off plate is in, it is a solid muffled system. If the state you have the car registered in prohibites the use of a non muffled system, then dont run it open on the street.

We are producing the exhaust to be a street system that has a track mode. Not the other way around. This is why we have taken all of this time to make it quiet.

The cut-out causes an issue because the capability of have a track exauhst is illegal in some states (like CA), regardless of wether or not you actually use it. In FL (where I am and just check the laws last night with all the legal hype going on) they expect you to have and exercise common sense, leave it muffeled on the road, then if you are at the track or a car show or similar, you are allowed to open it up. It is latter that I think you designed the system for, and is the intetion I'd have when runing a WMS exauhst.

Man... Just having the option of a cut-out is illegal? Wow. I geuss you could always weld the block plate instead of bolting it in if you are that concerned.
Do they check for this during inspections, or is it something the street police do if you get pulled over or what not? I cant imagine them just randomly checking when your running it closed.

If it is bolted closed for all intents and purposes it is converted to a closed system...... just don't be stupid and run it open on the street and you won't get pulled for it... a little common sense goes a long way here...... in the bolted closed It looks like it is part of the way the system goes together

Dont know about GA but what about states requiring yearly inspections?

Here, they only inspect when you buy a used car (or bring a used car into the state) and I guarantee you they ALWAYS find something that needs to be fixed (not calling it a conspiracy but it always seemed shifty to me) Usually the burden in on the seller to get car fixed to pass inspection.

no problem in GA as long as it passes emissions......

I like the look of this system, and will probably buy one. So you guys know, I'm not trying to be argumentative here - just trying to promote discussion!

What I'll do is leave the exhaust as-is. If I get cited for it, then I'll have to figure something out.

I want this exhaust. Eagerly awaiting final, final details.

Gawd. Are those sounds clips in this thread still accurate? It's hard to gauge quite how loud it is closed (which is the biggest concern). But if it really is just about the same as the milltek. Woof.

Like some people have allready said, this is a STREET system that is capable of being a track exhaust. That was our goal. I have gotten several calls and comments asking for a street system without the cutout, but we dont really see the point. It IS a street exhaust.

When will they be out on the market? We actually installed our second production model this week at our shop. However, as some of you may allready know, we are having trouble getting our current manufacturer to commit to our orders. We are now looking into ways of speeding up the process, so the systems make it to our customers in a timely manner. As soon as the production kinks are worked out, you will see them flowing out into the market.

Brian,
I was under the impression that big part of the cost was in the cut out not in the custom muffler. ( No resonator ) Sorry!
I'm not trying to start anything or tell Randy or you how to run WMS. I just thought like a few other's out there, it would be nice to have a choice in a cat back system from WMS. You offer two swaybars don't you. Or when I called and talk to Randy he said you did.
WMS makes some very sweet products for Mini's I was just thinking / hoping that some day WMS would offer a choice when it came to an exhaust system for the 02 - 06 Mini.
As 99% of us know the 07 Mini will be turbo charged and it will / should not need to as quieted as the S/C engine.

Thanks & Best of luck.

I have my system....

That is the good news... the bad news is that it is in the back of my Xterra waiting to be installed on Tuesday..... but.... what this means is that units are coming "off the line" This is a production ... no excuses... unit.

let me add to this by saying that the "plate" that closes it looks like a spacer that is needed or the system does not fit together..... police officer: "what is that?" WMS owner: "Oh it is a spacer that the installer had to use to get the damn thing to fit."

Wouldn't that cause the cop to think that exhaust was flowing through the unmuffled portion of the exhaust system? What if you told them you had that installed to prevent exhaust from flowing through the unmuffled portion? It would be true and it might make them more likely to move on.

the "spacer" is a weighted block off plate to keep the car balance..haha..
