Resetting ECU.. Should I or Should I not.?

Hello all..
a member who is too busy motoring everywhere
in his 2.8 weeks old mcs with 2002 miles.

Well. guess what.
I've been reading on some posts regarding ECU resets.
talking about 'learning' the way I drive.
The main reason of me wanting to reset my ECU is that I've learned how to drive manual on my new mini with lots of stalls during my 'first-time'.

Should I go ahead and reset, then drive it like there will be no tomorrow?

god.. I love Mini. Made me crazy.

I've heard similar comments about the Mini "learning" how you drive. One person even told me to ignore the break-in period and drive at WOT from day 1 so my car will perform better. (Of course, this person doesn't own a Mini!) I was thinking of following the break-in guidelines and then resetting my ECU. My method should give the same performance after 1.5K miles, right?

remember and forget

The computer continues learning and revising, so as your driving improves, it will keep up.

as above, the ECU will continue to adapt to your driving so no need to reset unless you are specifically having problems with the program.

You have to buy the separate performance option or it doesn't come with one....

reset away!

It's an ADAPTIVE system, no harm in resetting. It will start "learning" all over again. If you drive about the same way, it will end up in about the same tune. If you change driving styles, it can acclerate lerning the new driving style...

Exactly. If you reset, it just goes back to exactly where it is now. Resetting for performance is pointless.

I always reset after an ECU version upgrade to clear out the old A/F mapping and let the new code redevelop the new settings. Yes, I could just let time go by and eventually it will get to the same newly adjusted place, but this is America, damn it, and I want things to happen right away!

I've been thinking, and it's possible

that the programming is so gastly in the adaptive areas that it COULD end up in a different local operating state, but that would be truley sad, as it would indicate total incompitance in motor programming..... But it is possible.

In english, it's possible the motor could learn a bad habit that can only be removed by a reset and a different "learning curve" by the motor....

I have flashed back to back stock, standard and tuner MTH files - and it is immediately felt. There is no need to flash for performance - and Franz confirmed it to me. The adaptive properties are very minor, and take a couple tanks of fuel to be felt anyway. Any immediate changes you feel are not due to a reset.

Well, lets say the dealer resets the ECU, I am assuming that it is best to drive normally or maybe slightly more aggressively than normal at first?

I brought my Mini in to have the doorlocks reprogramed and when I got it back it seems way smoother. Do you think they reset the computer also?

I disagree. I installed a throttle body and tons of other stuff this past weekend, and within 50 miles [read: the same tank!], my car developed the usual throttle body-related flat spot from 2-3k rpm. It was not there on the shake down run immediately after install . That's right: from no flat spot to instantly recognizable flat spot. In 50 miles.

OK I'll re-phrase - they take a couple tanks to *fully* be felt.

Anyone else notice that after resetting the ECU, the odometer mileage is lower than before resetting? After resetting, I dropped 3 miles on the odo. Another 15 miles later I reset again and dropped 1 mile. The service interval still remained the same.

aminicooper, did not notice that, I will look. I have done many resets after making modifications. Never had any problems. If the milage drop is true, I might have a 0 miles '03 Mini by the end of the weekend

Yea I went to write down my trip computer miles, and I also wrote down the mileage. After I went to reset I noticed the mileage was different. Went to get gas and reset again just to see if it was a fluke. It went down a mile.

The first time I did it to lose 3 miles, I was in the "test" feature a while looking around. The second time I was in and out. Maybe it's time-based, or maybe I'm just crazy. Either way, I lost 4 miles. After one restart and drive, it hasn't recorrected. Not concerned.

Don't forget to fill out your odometer statement properly if you ever sell.
