My Dyno Results of 6/01/05

Attached are the results of two Dyno pulls done on 6/01/05 on my 2003 MCS. I have the following engine/drivetrain mods: 15% pulley, Alta CAI, UUC exhaust, GIAC software, Nology wires, Denso IK22 plugs. The pulls were done with the hood up and two fans running. Ambient temp. 64 deg., relative humidity 94% (raining). Total number of pulls 4, the best were the last two. I screwed up the first pull as I was behind the wheel and as it was my first time, I d/n follow instructions and got a little freaked by the sound and feel. Second pull done right after first, 167 hp. Best numbers were 186 whp and 163 lb/ft torque. I am pretty happy with the numbers. Should I be? I am looking for any comments, positive or negative. Do the graphs look good/right? It looks to me like the car started dropping off a bit between 6-7k. Is this a problem and can it be addressed? Did the knock sensor detect something perhaps? Again, any and all comments welcome.

Did you get an A/F ratio plot during the runs? Gives you some idea of how much you can still sap just by optimizing A/F ratio.

No A/F info, only what I posted. I am new to the Dyno, did not really know what degree of information was available or what even to ask for - just took what the operator gave me.

Agree that you need an a/f reading for peace of mind. Those are outstanding numbers, but you just want to be sure that you're not running lean to produce them.

What was you WHP before the mods...this is important if you wanna know whether or not you are gettin the most out of yer mods

I would say it's pretty good though

Looks good! I am starting to like the idea of this GIAC software, a lot of positive remarks!

Next time, or in the future, try to get the A/F ratio measured, it helps to know what is happening on the fuel side of things!

Cheers!

I don't belive that with just a CAI, Cat-back exhaust, ECU, and 15% pulley you got 186whp. It's not possible, SHOW ME A DYNO!!

Oh wait......

Tuls: No unmodified baseline numbers. I wish in retrospect I had - I just started modding piece by piece pretty quickly after taking delivery of the car, and wanted to spend $ on mods, not visits to the Dyno. Shortsighted thinking with the benefit of hindsight. The car is a '03.

Coopersaz: I do like the feel of the GIAC. Again, no before/after numbers unfortunately, but improved throttle response and some added smoothness at a minimum.

Minispilot: Good one. I have girded my loins, and await. A post of Dyno results is no guarantee of a free pass here.

Thanks for the tips on tracking A/F numbers. I feel foolish for not thinking of that before the Dyno pulls. I will have to do some more testing it seems. Any thoughts on what is happening with the car between 6-7k? How does the torque look, both in terms of numbers and across the rpms?

well now...those are great #s then...I only have a 17%, uuc and BenFer CAI

I am making 188 WHP

Which I know I can prolly get more with soft ware and some of the other stuff you have...that's exciting...

So figure you have a strong motor....mine was 162 WHP stock...which was very abnormal from what I have been told cause I was smoking guys with mods and even some JCW cars when mine was stock...they all made me go to the dyno to find out why...and that was it....most cars rated @164 hp stock would have more like 130 to 140 some hp at the wheels....but not me...heh eh...and by the looks of it...not you Either....

welcome to the "wednesday build" club...LOL

I get the gist of the "Wednesday build" club comment, and also the tongue in cheek nature - but can you elaborate on the origin? Again, given the mods on the car, I am pretty happy with the numbers, but alway searching for a little more. Maybe some porting/polishing, bigger intercooler, etc., etc. I have also become a bit envious of '05 gearing/lsd.

Anyone else willing to chime in on on my previous questions concerning what might be happening between 6-7k with hp and the torque numbers/curve?

well you can get the LSD...and the gearing is nothing to worry about cause I am still out running 05s...and never forget that shifting or rather driving is everything in a race...I have out run people while I was driving a slower car just cause I have out driven them....

As for the other mods...YES YES YES!!! especially the intake manifold....port polish...forced induction cars love this...and then ofcourse there's the header...

I am planning on building the engine soon...which intails everything getting port and polish....inter kewler, LSD, clutch and flywheel...etc...

the thing to remember is that jsut cause this is a mini it doesn't mean there is some special formula for tuning...it's simple...

just learn about forced induction motors...everyone has thier own style of tuning and some ARE infact better than others...but in the end the best thign you can do is learn it for your self...and ofcourse if you are not doing it your self you find a compitent person who knows what they are doing...hopfully...heh heh...ehhhh

as for the wednesday build thing...it's just the joke about how wednesday is the day that everyone works hard...so they put special attention into building the motors and so in return you get a strong motor...

as for your 6 to 7k problem...with out seeing the A/F ratios it would be hard to say if it can...or rather what the problem may be....it may be as simple as getting too rich...my A/F drops around 4500 and comes back up just after 5000...this creates a slight loss in power that I can feel now ever so light but enough that I feel the car bog a little...this is easily fixable with an APEXi AFC ...I just haven't bought it yet cause of my intentions to have the car down for a while...heh heh....

I hope this rambling helps...I do not know everything, I just know what works for me from MY expirences tuning...

I am always happy to help if I can...

Chris

Thanks for all of the input Chris. I like to think I am a pretty decent driver, but your comments about driving just prompted me to add that I am heading to one of Phil Wicks MINI driving schools in a couple of weeks. I am looking forward to it.
