Drivetrain Anyone know any news on the John Cooper Works upgrade?
About three weeks ago I spoke to my dealer and the stuff
is definitely coming although he couldn't say when. He had
no info on a Cooper Works Mini from their garage through
the Mini dealerships....but I told him if and when I am now
first on that list....

>>I am anxious, and I want it!!
Me too, when I get my MCS that is. I heard that it will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto show this coming week. Don't know if that is true but that is what I heard. Other than that, it is supposed to launch in UK this month and US in March.
That is the latest I've been able to pick up anyway.

When I spoke to one of the mechanics at my mini dealer, he said the same thing, "soon man, be patient, it will be worth the wait." I just can't imagine that much Hp in my Black bullet. I get the same wakeless nights I got when I was waiting for my car, now I have the car and now I get sleeples nights waiting for this!! Arrggghhhh....
cost - $2000 - $2500 (this does not include labor)
adds about 40 hp, pretty signifigant
Not sure what it includes, but most likely, upgrades intake manifold, possibly new exhaust manifold, smaller pully for the charger, maybe a bigger cam. different computer chip...

The latest I heard, they were dropping the program for the US for an indefinite period. The targets just aren't being met. I hope they reverse this decision, but as of now, that's what the info is. I could tell you where I heard this, but then I'd have to kill you.
It's interesting that the above post not only mentions a "garage" version, but also states that the S has a limited slip (not true). Wonder where they get their specs?

From JCW:
The works conversion will consist of new cylinder head reworked
supercharger
and new exhaust system
Kind regards
JCW
I don't remember what the stock boost was, but I remember it was quite high for the 50hp gain from the base to the S. As expected, it seems the SC and the head are the main restrictions as JCW targeted these to get more power. Probably a much improved flowing head and SC. The "exhaust system" will include a new header also. However, I've heard the price will be more than the $2500 someone stated above.

>>Just got an email back from JCW and they said, "we will be alunching our conversion for the S in March."
pbnj,
Did they specify if that was in the US? I have a very good source that says the JCW package was nixed in the US.

I sent the request via their Inquiry form. On that form, I specified where I was from. I hope they would put two and two together.
I am going to send them another, more specific request.

Just had this response from JCW today. I had asked about when the S package would be available in the US since my car is due to be completed in April.
"Our main launch is now scheduled for the end of feb/early march and therefore it may take a little longer to distribute worldwide, but you should be able to get it in april. Sorry, for the further delay, but we have put a lot of time and effort into the project and wouldn't want to rush things at this stage. Your local dealer will receive information and brochures from BMW shortly before the launch.

Paul Cooper

Now I'm starting to wonder if maybe BMW is nixing without the knowledge of JCW????
The source I have said that BMWNA was concerned about the extent of the modifications required to reach the performance goals, and being able to warranty them. The source also said that the performance goals (200hp+) weren't quite being met (I think they are just shy of 200).
It sounded to me like the JCW stuff would still be available eventually, but as a tuner product. I think BMWNA is working with some stateside tuners to develop a package as well - but that is pure rumor.
Interesting.....things that make you go hmmm.

I don't know if this helps, in the January issue of EVO (page 12), said "that MINI officially announced the 200bhp Cooper S "Works" package will cost L3500 when is goes on sale early in 2003 and it will be launched at the Detroit Auto Show (which is going on this week). The package comprises of a new gas-flowed head, modified turbine blades within the supercharger, a freer-flowing air filter and a complete sports exhaust system. Power leaps from 161bhp to 200bhp and torque is up from 155lb ft. to 187lb ft." In the same article it noted that "Hartge and Hamann beat the "Works" kit to market with 193bhp, the Hartge Cooper S has a TUV approved (the German tuning standard), and costs only L1499 +VAT fitted. Modifications to the supercharger and revised engine management (individually mapped according to customer preferences). Birds UK, which fits the Hartge upgrade inits Uxbridge based facility. claims the true figure is around 212-215 bhp, as Hartge is usually conservative when quoting power outputs."
How do we get this to the US??? Also, I have heard of zero announces so far by MINI at the Detroit Show.

Well Dinan is developing MINI products, so if JCW is out with MINIUSA, Dinana would be the likely replacement I'd guess.
Gosharks: the Hartge US conversion has been discussed before. No dice as of yet. Fuel octane issues among the reasons. *maybe* sometime in the future.

Has anyone heard of a Front Mount Intercooler upgrade for the S?
It seems to me that that the current design is also a big restriction and is just not large enough for the amount of boost they are putthing through it. Moving it to the front would also keep it from getting soaked with heat coming off the motor.

Just got off the phone with my hotty at Cincinnati MINI and she says that the WORKS package is going to be available as a dealer installed option for around $3000. She also stated that is was going to be 6 months to a Year.
I think we're converging on an answer:
My note to JCW:
I recently sent an inquiry about a potential JCW conversion for the MCS. Your
response said you would be launching the conversion in March. What is not
clear is if the conversion is for the US MCS.
As I'm sure you're aware, this is a highly anticipated upgrade. It is
currently being discussed in the "Performance Modifications" Forum of
https://www.northamericanmotoring.com .
Thank-you for your time.
Cheers.

I'm highly suspect that it will only be $3000. But if it IS $3000 INSTALLED, I'll be the first in line at my dealer!!!!!
