So I installed my Alta Intake on my 2005...and...

I dont even hear it. The 2005 exhaust is alot louder then I thought. I hear the whistle every once and a while but thats about it. Here's a quick Snap shot. I didnt remove the top wall... I just didn't feel comfortable taking all that out. (I might in the future) Other then that I feel no difference really and didn't expect to. But it does look nice.

Good job, looks nice (and red! )

If you want more alta intake sound you can:
Rev your engine up to 4000-5000 rpm more often or try wide open throttle!
Remove that back plate to the intake box which lets in more air from the cowl area and allows you to hear more of the intake sound.
Roll down your windows when you drive and turn off the stereo- helps to hear the engine/intake/exhaust better.
Remove your helmet.
Pull out your earplugs

No silicone hose? yet? More red stuff in the engine bay!

Yeah silicone hose will come after I get my car detailed. (engine bay cleaning). Yeah I figured I can get even more air if I take that back wall off..but I dunno. I'm real protective of the car I don't feel right taking it out.

for some reason, the silicone hose really seems to make the car scream... it is an enjoyable sound

ok i just lied. I just took her out and opened her up. I definately feel a difference. The car just...responds so much better upon acceleration. but still no sound. The 2005 just sounds so aggressive as is.

dude...take out the back partition. The filter can't breath unless you do. You won't hurt anything. But unless yo do, you just pissed away the money you spent on the new filter.

I do believe your wrong. The PILO intake does still have the wall intact and I wouldn't go that far with "pissing your money away".

As you can see the PILO is setup exactly that way. I just don't want to take apart that whole section. I may once I get the Silicone tubing.

No one right or wrong...but you will love the "Pisshhh" sound when you're working on clutch on every gears...that's what you're missing.

Another vote for removing the back wall.

It is amazing how much of the wonderful noise of the supercharger escapes through the cowl vent if you remove that back wall piece.

That jet-engine whine is much louder, especially if your window is down.

Gotta remove it. Don't worry about heavy rain/snow getting into your filter, there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of us MINI owners with the Alta intake, and I have not yet seen or heard anyone complain that their Alta intake sucked in rain water.

Just do it!

I didn't install my own Alta intake, so somebody correct me if I am wrong here. I did watch as Randy Webb installed my intake, and as I recall the wall piece just came out intact. So it could be reinstalled later if desired - right? The only irreversible part of the install was that the weatherstripping that sits on top was trimmed to fit the Alta, so that would need to be replaced if you wanted revert to stock (although I can't imagine why!).

I cut my factory weatherstrip while doing the Alta install, but Im
just going to butt-end the weatherstrips together and e-tape over
the seams when Im ready to sell the car.

the Alta from my experience is a step up from the Pilo.
I think you can get similar results with the Pilo if you drill out
the holes in the back wall..but again, some people rather keep
it quiet than squeezing out that last drop of hp. I also
think the Alta's foam filter itself is freer than the Green filter.

If it was my daily driver or was a stereophile kinda guy, id
keep the back wall.

If you don't remove the wall you wasted a lot of money. Your butt dyno may be telling you lies, but we aren't.

It's your car so you don't have to listen to any one.

here's mine

I would definetly open up the back wall. You could simply remove the stosk one and cut an opening or purchase a modified back wall unit. I think the advantage of the supplimental air via the vent comes in to place at low RPM. The car is not forced to suck air in via the stock duck like a straw.

My CAI kit which I purchased from myminiparts.com came with a replacement back wall (or lack there of) and a TGI filter.
Goobs of whine .

see pics - gallery - bahamabart.

If you wanted to buy one, I'm sure Peter from myminiparts could facilitate.

Silicone hose?

What does the silicon hose connect? WHat is the regular hose made out of and why is the silicone one betteR? Also, what does that backwall do that is so important that Pat doesn't want to take it out? Thanks, don't exactly follow all of this, I am new.

I haven't heard this much about bringing down the wall since Berlin!

It's Pat's wall; he can do whatever he likes. And the power he's "losing" is nothing like what we all lose just by riding around with the AC on.

Besides, if we leave him alone (and don't back him into a corner), he's going to finish the job sooner or later anyway. Maybe then he'll report the massive difference and you can say you told him so.

Hey pat,

it's your car, do what you like.

the more obsessed of us (me) scratch and claw for every hp, so i/we get frustrated that your not as addicted as i/we are/am.

the hose makes for about 1/2 of the total systems performance (according to Alta)
