Why you should pay someone to install your pulley...

With all the concerns over products and vendors raised lately... the underlying issue seems to be that those who have had their pulley installed by one of the known tuners, Helix, WMS, etc. do not have to worry. We have heard about calibration and checking of pulleys, but here is a story of why you want the pro to do it.

I think of myself as handy - I have taught myself too many things and am very DIY. I do not have a garage, so attended a pulley party in Providence last november. I would have otherwise preferred to do a pulley myself.

My car was very late in delivery from Mini - unexpectedly missed 2 ships...

When Randy began to remove the lower motor mount, it was not put in correctly from the factory. He and Yarrow re-tapped the threads and fixed it up correctly, as it should have been from Mini. I would not have been able to do this, nor would I have had the knowledge or ability to deal with the situation. This was part of the pulley installation procedure at no extra charge.

I have an ET 15% pulley that neither me, nor my dealer (peabody) have any concerns or worries about. When a dealer does not question an aftermarket modification because of the name associated with the installer, you know your money is well spent.

Godspeed at 15% or less.

hmmm - anyone else paranoid?

Hmmmm?? In a thread about reduction pulleys, not one but 2 "hits" on motor-mounts incorrectly installed? Makes ya think, huh...

One wonders if this can be verified on one's own MCS, hopefully w/o doing any dis-assembly?

Is the mounting any different for Cooper vs Cooper S? I'm curious, too.

Any details on 'not put in correctly from the factory'?

Cross-threaded?
If something was done incorrectly at the factory, I'd want the dealer to fix it (if possible) depending on just how serious the issue is.
TIA for any info.

Any of pictures of the engine mount mod? This sounds very interesting.

I did my own pulley, no problems. Re-tapping a cross threaded bolt hole can be touchy business. First depending on how bad it was chewed up and getting the tap started straight. Buying a freakin tap and a new bolt depending on it's condition.
Basiclly this is warranty work, but caught in the act it's just better to go ahead and fix it. I have seen this on other cars that were new, on first disassembly and finding the bolts installed cross threaded.
It's the fault of installers on the line not taking the time to properly start the bolts and air tools that will drive anything.

I was getting the impression that the hole was in the wrong place or something like that. Thanks for the clarification.
