Drivetrain Want More Down Low Power
Want More Down Low Power - 19%?
So, my quest for more horsepower has brought me short of a cylinder head, cam, and intake manifold by the end of this month. Now, I know that a head and cam will give me a good jump in power, but I am looking for more down low grunt.
This has brought me to something I originally did not consider.... the 19% pulley
People who have it swear by it, and Randy Webb swears against it
So, what am I to do?! Here is my thought.... At the next pulley party here (Feb 20th) have Randy remove my 15% pulley and replace it with the 19% pulley... however, there are reason why I didnt get it in the first place.... heat and a/f mixture. My question is, if I upgrade my injectors to the 400cc injectors from M7 and have my unichip tuned for it at the local tuner down here, should I be safe? I now have a large TMIC so I am a little less worried about the heat, especially since I plan to p/p the blower in the near future anyway which should drop temps a bit more.
So.... to 19% + injectors + unichip tune OR to not?

Ive already got the Unichip so tunability isnt a problem.
I would also like to know how long people with the 19% have been running on that pulley and what their driving habits are like. I tend to spend alot of time at high revs, especially when cutting around the retards driving 60 in the fast lane

Oh, and this brings me to another question.... I have the Alta 15% right now and would go with their 19% if I were to upgrade... question being, do I need to pull the entire pulley off or just the outer piece?
Also, how hard is it to change the belt? The pulley is the only thing I didnt do by myself on the car, but changing out the outer piece on the Alta is simple and I highly doubt changing a belt is harder than installing springs and a swaybar.

Actually in seriousness, I think a lot has been done in the '05 to help this. I had an '03 with various mods such as pulley, exhaust, intake, chip... And it still bogged down some. My new '05 with the JCW is significantly better, and with 7,000 miles on it, I have never bogged down. I felt a similiar low down grunt in a stock '05. Not sure which specific change fixed that, but probably the gears had a lot to do with it.
Since you already have the Unichip, you may want to try out the injectors from Helix with the 19% pulley.

Thanks for the responses.... you are right about why I spend time at high revs... I didnt think that I wouldnt need to as much with the 19% pulley. I do have a unichip tuner in my area, so I look forward to having it tuned on the dyno to make sure I am getting a nice smooth powerband with a good peak number.
Still, is the 19% outer piece able to fit on the 15% hub? If so I dont need to blow the money having randy install it, I could just pull the 4 bolts out and throw the new ones in. Injectors are an easy install also, so if I can get all this I am looking at around $700-$750 for this bump in power.

dude, I think with all the time you spend in upper rpm range (close to or above 7000) a 19% might not be a good idea.
What about 17%, I haven't read to much on the belts failing at high rpm with those.

Like it was mentioned earlier, I wont need to rev so high with the 19%. I would calm down on the high rev driving a bit
Heat shouldnt be THAT much of an issue now.... I bet the Alta TMIC probably bring the temps back down close to a stock IC with a 15%... plus I will get the injectors and have the chip tuned to avoid any lean conditions.
GIAC isnt an option greatgro... do you get commission or something?

Im tryin to get ahold of Peter to see how long I would have to wait to get some injectors. I should get paid in the next week or so and this sounds like its going to be the next step for me. $700-$750, get to dyno the car, and gain the down low torque I crave
This will be a post AGS/TB upgrade. HOPEFULLY Randy can find me a header... been a week with no reply
I emailed the guys at ALTA and here's the answer about putting a 19% pulley on a 15% hub:
NO, because each pulley is matched to a specific hub. However, they WILL give you a significant discount on the 19% pulley/hub combo if you have an ALTA 15% pulley on your car already.
I think it sucks, and wish now that I had gone with the Helix/P&D, but whatever.
I am saving for the 19% plus GIAC plus injectors...hopefully by the time I get the nod from the old lady, the injectors might have come down in price. With any luck it'll be before spring so I can make the most of this cold, dense, Mid-Atlantic air that's sure to come.

I gave them a call this morning also for the lack of a good response on these boards and my response was a bit different. I was told that it may or may not... depends on when you bought your 15%. I guess they did start to make them interchangalbe at one point.... the guy said the timeline I gave him is on the borderline.
