Engine Rebuild Rocker Arm Questions

Hi.building my engine on a 2006 MCs 83k miles .Not sure about the rocker arm tappets. How do you know if they are good.A few where stuck but managed to free them up,they feel a little loose do they get stiff with oil pressure or should they feel stiff and have some tension when you push down on the plastic cap. Should i replace all now. Any info on this would be great thnx.

I had one tappet with some wear on the roller when I rebuilt my engine a year ago. That is the only one I replaced.

hwy78garage,

Where are you finding those prices? I'm looking for rocker arms for a 2006 R50 and the prices I'm seeing are considerably higher.

Let me know, I'm in the middle of a tear down.

After replacing the timing chain componets I still have this exact same noise from a year ago. Do you guys think it’s rocker arms? Someone else suggested it is. Also if I could do the timing chain does that mean rocker arms should be no problem? The cam has to go in a specific way because of the peg on the face of it and I own a Bentley manual. Lmk please!! Thank you!

Best I can hear, it does sound like Tappet Clatter.
As far as changing the rockers, you won't have to worry about Cam timing at all, you can simply pull the tensioner, which will take the pressure off the chain, with the pressure off the chain, the Cam will simply lay in place while you swap the rockers. Actually a pretty easy job.

Nice. Holy cow I did all that work for nothing.

Hey so RockAuto 🎸 🚗 has intake for $22/arm and exhaust for $30/arm

should I replace them all? Should I replace the cam? Is there a cheap solution?

Oh! There is an unusually high number of mini coopers at pick n pull near me (3), one is reported having 140,000 miles. Would those rockets be worth looking at?

Personally, with that many miles, even if they are ok, you're just setting yourself up to do the job again much sooner than later.

The RockAuto thing is up to you, I just replaced mine with aftermarket, couldn't see paying $800 ish for a set of OEM, but it's always a gamble, no matter whose you use.

I’m gonna check them out, so that I might learn for cheaper if this is the issue. With my tax return I’ll get a new cam shaft and rocker arms.

Thank you everyone for the input!!

They are $4.20 an arm, so I’ll hopefully find all eight I need. Hopefully the cold scared off the engine pickers.
