I would bet it is the belt tensioner or the friction wheel.

I will check it out. Not sure if that will be it or not. The car didn't make that noise when I shut the car off to do the oil cooler, but it did start on the next start up after the install.

I double checked all my work so I am almost positive it was not an install error.

I am thinking it could be the oil pump. Maybe the cooler is making the oil pump work harder?

is that a common problem that would make a whine/growling noise?

i bypassed the cooler today to see if the noise would go away but it didnt, so i am up for any suggestions.

Belt whine is usually related to how tight it is or if you got some foreign substance on it. I had a belt installed by a "pro" and it whined like crazy. I simply adjusted it and noise was gone.

its definitely not belt slippage, not that kind of squeek. its more like a miss matched gear kind of sound.

So you're saying it doesn't go away when you rev up the car or start driving? You might want to get under the hood with a probe and start listening to things to try and figure out where the source of it is coming from. Maybe your friction wheel? Not that this is your problem, but the pulley or the pulley bearing can become noisy, causing a high pitched squeal or scraping sound when the engine is running. Just a thought. We have an article here that goes over it with more info and figure 2 gives you an idea of how to maybe test it. May not be your issue though... Maybe you can post a video of the sound for us?

Did you go in there with a probe and put it on components to distinguish where it's coming from? A video might help too.

Mine has a whine after installing an oil cooler. Particularily noticeable on cold starts or when the car is stationary. By trial and error I worked out that it was the sound of the oil pump reverberating through the bottom of the sump. Presumably it is transmitted through the oil pick up line. Not sure why it only started after the oil cooler installation, presumably extra load on the pump?

yeah i was assuming the same thing. it would be too much of a coincidence that something else failed the first time i started the car up after the cooler install.

did you install a tube and fin or a plate style oil cooler?
