Drivetrain M7 NO2 Newbie Questions
M7 NO2 Newbie Questions
I was just wondering if anyone here is running the M7 Nitrous Oxide kit. I know Maxmini has been, but I was wondering how practical it is. I know it's probably the cheapest quick HP you can add to your MINI, but how does one use it?
For instance, how long does the standard bottle last? I know it's related to use, but how many uses does a bottle give? Are we talking a few, or dozens or more? How much does it cost to refill the tank? When the NO2 is enabled, does the car exhibit any other behavior besides wicked speed? What I'm getting at is that I know it's not street legal, but could anyone know you had NO2 enabled once it kicked in, besides seeing you accelerate like a banshee?
Finally, if you had the NO2 kit installed, would you remove it before taking it to the dealer for servicing?? Would there be anything left to indicate you had it installed?

Regarding your last question, yes..... I dont have the system myself but I know that they drill a tap into your intake manifold and thread in a little nipple thing. That will be visible even if you remove everthing else.... removing everything else is a chore in itself though. I believe I read somewhere that it costs most people about $40 to fill the whole bottle.
I have my own questions about this system..... first off, does it have or do you ever plan on creating a remote enabling system so that you dont have to get out of the car, open the boot, and open the valve manually? Also, does it have that thing (no clue what its called) that clears the lines before you do a run (you see all the crap spew out) so that you can get it into your system faster? If so, is there a way to use it to cool your intercooler ?

As for removal it could be done and I would advice at lease taking the NOS fitting out of the intake and placing the brass cap off in place of it. The location of the intake is not usually wide open and could be over looked during a normal service perhaps. As for the rest of the system to me it would depend on why i had the car in for service . If it was for a repair under warranty I might take out more than if it was just going in for a mileage required service. If it was a real sticky issue I would remove the system entirely and we can supply you with a un drilled intake piece to replace the drilled one if need be. Hope this answers some of the questions and feel free to PM me anytime .Randy

I use to use a ZEX nitrous kit on my 98 Prelude back in the days and
blew past 95Vette's. I usually used the 60shot and it lasted quite a few
launches. A 10lbs bottle will last approx 3min at full open valve. Since
your launch is usually no more than 6-8sec duration in the streets, you can
use it plenty of times.
NOS and ZEX also sell bottle warmers which will maintain the bottle
temp at about 80-85F so that your bottle pressure does not drop in
cold mornings or in winter. Once you drop below 600psi on the bottle,
the bottle is pretty much useless unless you use the remaining nitrous
on a intercooler spray ring...or use it to freeze bugs in your garage
for fun..
I use to use a Remote bottle opener, but the clutch assembly was very
hard to set on various bottles...each bottle has its own valve open/close
torque and the clutch assembly would always loosen or change settings
while on the car (from heat/cold in the trunk)...Therefore, I would not
recommend them. The best way is when you are ready to take your car
out for some fun driving open the valve before you leave, and close the
valve when you stop to eat lunch or get home. There is no safer and
sure way.
As maxmini mentioned, nitrous retails for about $3.50-$3.75 per lbs...so
you're looking at about $40 on a refill. If I was to get a nitrous kit,
I would definitely get the M7 Venom kit. I would also install the bottle
behind the driver seat for easy valve open/close access and put a
safety blow down tube on the bottle so just in case the bottle pressure
rises too high from heat inside the cabin, the safety valve will release the
pressure through the tube and outside the car.
One word of caution...nitrous is basically a turbo in a can. It is very
addictive, so be prepared to buy a few 20lbs bottles. :D

re: N2O or NO2
Yeah Ok, well I said I was a newbie.
Thanks Maxmini and Kenchan on that info. I guess I'd love to hear more real world experiences with N2O, in terms of amount of maintenance needed, or how far an MC can be pushed, etc... $40 is no big deal!
I do appreciate M7's willingness to switch out the drilled intake piece if needed.
Since it kicks in under full throttle, and I tend to drive my MINI that way, shifting at 6,000 rpm, what exactly happens to my RPM's when the NOS kicks in? Will my RPM's suddenly shoot up like mad and therefore need to be mindful of the rev limiter?
Thanks!!

I'm not positive, but I believe the Venom system has a computer that detects the conditions you're squeezing in and if it deems it harmful it will cut the nitrous. Meaning, if you get near the rev-limiter, it will shut it off and also if you floor it at too low of an RPM (say off idle) it won't engage until a certain RPM since there is the possibility of throwing a rod if the RPMs are too low and the nitrous is injected.
