Clutch slipping randomly...but is it the clutch?

Hey all,

Very randomly, when I put the pedal to the floor in 5th and 6th the clutch would slip. Then about a month ago I noticed it started doing it in 3rd and 4th gear, so I started pricing up clutches and getting ready to buy one, but it hasnt slipped since!
Ive driven her hard (and to the R-line with each change) and she hasnt slipped at all since!

What would cause the clutch to slip randomly, and only every now and then? Anything other than the clutch I could look at?

Cheers in advance
Matt

It could be an intermittent hydraulic issue. Maybe the slave is seizing and not releasing fully when you let off the clutch pedal? I'm guessing it's more likely that it's still your clutch going out. They do funny things when they start to wear out. Sometimes you can bring a clutch "back to life" a little bit with hard driving but eventually it'll get bad again. How many miles on the car?

Spring pressure (pressure plate) HOLDS the clutch in...hydraulics PULL it off..to disengage it (letting you shift)..so bleeding it would be a waste of time...
A heavily modded car might make more HP than a WORN OR GLAZED clutch and flywheel can hold...
But most do fine with stock till 300 or so HP...
If a clutch slips cold then grips OK warm...its on the way out...a tiny bit of expansion from heat let's it grip...but as soon as it wears...it will no longer work.
Many ways to test...simplest...when cold in an parking lot, put it in the wrong gear...
If it stalls...cluch is fine...if it chugs and moves...it is slipping, not letting the motor stall. Different folks use a different gear ..but it all basicly works.

your symptoms of slipping with higher load , AKA higher gears and going down means clutch time, any further delay can mean flywheel time too.

Cheers guys.

Sorry, was thinking that maybe clutch wasnt disengaging / pulling fully off and hence the slip, but cool least I dont need to get under her to do that lol.
Only seems to do it when its hot. And from the odd time of still being half asleep leaving home in the morning (not enough coffee) she still stalls while in first.

Not too worried about the flywheel, going to go SM flywheel when I do do the clutch one day.

Cool, sounds like it can only be the clutch, so will get a new one soon.
Have a drag race meet coming up in a few weeks, so will see if that will finish the clutch off

Thanks everyone...merry xmas.

Slipping clutch

Just replaced my sc and crank pulley, went with a 16% wmw sc pulley and stock ati crank pulley, have about 87k miles on a 04 r 53, now when I punch it, I can feel clutch slipping ....sucks, never felt it with stock setup, guess it's time, just wondering how hard it is to replace clutch?

Ever done a clutch replacement on a FWD car? It's kind of tricky and the R53 doesn't exactly have a cavernous engine bay.

Never done one on a front wheel drive, looks very intimidating, lot of parts to take off, there are great videos and how to's on utube, might give it a try when clutch gets worse....

It's not a hard job, but it is time consuming.

Having the right amenities at your disposal is a huge help as well.

A great replacement option for the money is going to be the Valeo Clutch.

Give us a call if we can help you out.

It's not necessarily difficult but there a lot of pieces that come off. So it's just time consuming.
