Hot shifter boot after short shift install

Has anyone noticed warm air coming from shifter boot after installing short shifter?

Since removing the cover for the shifter linkage, I tried making a cover (don't laugh... several thicknesses of heavy foil and zip ties) to seal out dust, but it still allows warm air to be drawn into cabin through shifter area. This only seems to happen when sunroof is in vent position and or windows open a small amount. Just open enough to create vacuum in car to pull air through shifter box. If all windows are closed, it's not an issue.

Would this be a long term problem? Maybe too warm for the shifter lubricant?

Has anyone come up with good cover idea? I already reworked the heat shield to keep shifter linkage from rubbing after extention was added. It would take a lot of heat shield rework to allow the original cover with something to fill the gap or a new rigid cover.

I have the Helix short shift extension on mine have not noticed anything like that. Had to leave the shift linkage housing cover off for obvious reasons, but I have seen a couple places that have replacement covers. I'll see if I can find them again.

BTW, pulley still going strong. Did your buddy's MCS come in yet?

Mini Mania sells their shift kit with a new cover. Might be possible to get them to sell it separate, or make your own based on the picture.

Definitely put the heat shield back, but that doesn't seal the shifter box.

Most of the people that replied to my thread on the hosuing cover replied that they left their's off as well. One mentioned that there was more dust in the housing before the install.

Mine got hot too with the Alta SS kit. I lifted the boot up and put some dense foam between the boot and the shift box. Cut the foam round and put a slit down the middle, going length wise with the car, slide the boot back down.

Made the hot air go away. I did this awhile ago and have had no problems so far.

Good idea! Do you have pictures?

The heat does radiate through the shifter openning, which helps warm up the interior during the cold winter. Now, the weather is getting a bit warm and the extra heat isn't as welcoming.

What kind of foam did you use? Since the shifter shaft isn't stationary, do you have problems with rubbing?

Sorry to here that. I just installed the Alta SS kit over the weekend haven't noticed any hot air. Of course I had everything but the original shifter put back in its place.

Dave, I just used some white/yellow foam about an inch or so thick. The slit I was refering to in the last post was for the shift shaft to go back and forth in. I doesn't affect the way the shifter works.

Hmmmm, my shift box cover wouldn't go back on. A, yours did?
