I was browsing through DuelL AG's pics posted on FB and came across this pic of what looks like a NM intake (well the filter sort of looks like it's a NM intake lol), but they placed it where the coolant reservoir is usually at and vice versa. Does this make it more effective by placing it here like the pic? And if that is the case, why don't the rest of these companies that make aftermarket intakes do the same?

That is part of a Garrett turbo kit.

The intake that DuelL AG uses with the factory turbo, as does a lot of R56 owners in Japan, is the NM Intake system.

This is Cosque's R59. You can see the NM intake and NM Titanium heat shield.

So is it in fact more effective when they place it more towards the front of the engine compartment where the coolant reservoir is?

Disadvantages include still bringing in hot engine bay air, short pipe means more turbulent air flow, and have to relocate reservoir.

Here is the skinny on the short intake system.

Direct Air System - Intake (For R55-R57 S/JCW pre 2010.5)
The DuelL AG DAS intake utilizes an aluminum trumpet shaped intake pipe and hybrid-steel air filter to maximize turbo performance. By significantly reducing the length of the intake pipe the DAS increases air-flow potential while drastically reducing turbo lag. For MINI's with upgraded turbos or DME tuning, the DAS will ensure optimized air flow under all conditions.

To find out more, you may want to contact Vince at DuelL AG North America.

Does this system eliminate/relocate the AMM?

This system does not allow for the AMM sensor as you can see.

This system is primarily for European and Asian spec cars. There is even talk that DuelL AG may be doing away with this product since the NM Engineering system has become the standard over there. The only cars they seem to be using the DAS on are those with the Garrett Turbo Upgrade and DME Tuning Upgrade.

Thanks for the reply. Do Asia/EU cars not have an AMM at all?
