Want more Supercharger whine.

Ok so I love the sound that the supercharger makes, but was wondering how I could make it louder and not make anything else louder, intake or exhaust noise.

Would a supercharger pulley make it louder? planning on doing this soon anyways.

Would a new intake make it louder? wouldn't mind the intake noise to be louder but not too loud, I hated the cai on my civic with the wompp noise it always made was annoying.

Also if I did a 15% pulley what else needs to be done to be on the safe side?

Cold air intake and a 15% pulley, then you'll hear it more. Alta seems to be the loudest.

There is a plastic divider RIGHT behind the air filter/future CAI.
Sometimes this is removed, or has multiple holes cut in it to get MORE WHINE in to the car...the FIREWALL is not touched...but removing this plastic can help!! Some CAI kits remove it for their install.
And as stated above the ALTA STYLE CAI on the r53's have the most whine....

The loudest one I've heard was H&K's. I was told by several people that they could hear s/charger whine coming up behind them a half a block away.

Pulley and CAI, if you're still not satisfied with the whine, acquire a wife if you don't already have one.

The top often goes up much sooner than I prefer just because I would rather hear my SC whine than my copilot.

I think the old AGS thing that M7 made a long time ago made the whine super loud.

I 2nd Zippy here. I did the Alta CAI and removed this piece of plastic entirely and it is very loud. The Alta CAI does, however, also allow a bit of a whistle/flutter noise through from the BPV, even with the DTBPV, which annoys some. Here's a video of my car with just the Alta intake- no other mods at the time.

Check out the attached image. I found the image on the left online and it has the piece we're talking about (looks like this is a JCW intake where someone cut the top of the box open). Mine is the one on the right. Notice that piece is gone entirely.

Just so you know what the pulley sounds without an intake: I had a 16% pulley installed and I noticed some increased supercharger whine immediately -- but it was subtle. Made the engine sound a little throatier, and the whine started a little sooner. It's a subtle change, but I love it.

But I agree, get a cold air intake if you realy want more supercharger whine. Some intakes don't have accompanying whistling noise like Alta, if you are worried about that. I will probably be getting the DDM Works intake.

True story:

About 2 years ago, after my wife purchased her snappy R53, a 2006 S hardtop with low mileage, I knew I needed to "mod" it a bit.
She was opposed to any mods, so I used this: I said I was taking it for the day to a friends for some serious detailing.

After pulling out of the Helix shop in Philly with a 15% pulley and an upgraded CAI, I noticed the new sound immediately! What a cool whine!
But panic set in...would she notice? (plus it really zoomed along the busy streets)

She did comment on how it sounded a bit different...my reply:
"Ummm, we tightened some belts!"

And yes, she still doesn't know, and yes, we are still together...LOL

Here is a link that shows a good picture of the hole you can cut in the cowl behind the filter.

Works great with a CAI.
A small pulley, such as 15%, will also increase the S/C sound.

Oops, I think this bit of your post got lost in our responses. Because the pulley is smaller, you should get a smaller belt so that there is no slack. Some also recommend one step colder spark plugs. Your mechanic should know this if he's qualified to install the pulley.

I had a 16% pulley with smaller belt installed recently, no other modifications. I will go one step colder spark plugs when I change them soon.

Actually, I think they are back in production. I saw them selling one at MOTD. I was debating picking up the M7 vs the Alta for the GP...

I did the DDMworks CAI a few weeks ago, and the whine is much more pronounced and lively because of it. I do have the whistle sound which comes from the throttle body, but I've grown used to it. Couldn't be happier.

Would a 17% pulley be much louder than a 15% ?

I love the whistle/ whoosh.. it weirds people out who dont expect it.. lol

Is it the throttle body or the BPV?

It's definitely the BPV. You're going to hear it at partial throttle where you're only pushing a few pounds (right as it's changing over from NA to FI). If you get a DTBPV (Detroit Tuned) you'll notice a difference here as a result of a stronger spring (I did this). I have my OE BPV and played around with it once the DTBPV was on the car and you can definitely see how a whistle would occur.

I had already planned for the colder plugs anyways and I got a new correct belt already for it, was just wondering if there was any fuel mods needed, bigger fuel pump or anything else, but from the looks it seems the computer can handle it. I will be installing the pully myself seems to be a breeze, got a good look at it the other day when I installed my alternator. Been working on cars for about 15 years as a ASE Mechanic, had a work related injury 2 years ago that has limited me but I can still to this job.

I also went in and modified the stock air box, I enlarged the hole in the back bottom portion and the cowl plastic to 2 inches from the stock like 3/4 in hole into the, it seems to made it a little louder and should help with more air into it. I like this as I get more air and it still looks stock, need to upgrade the filter, thinking to get a nice aftermarket panel filter like the AFE dry filter. Trying to keep a stock appearance of everything.
