I think Peter @ M7 swapped the stock battery for a smaller aftermarket battery and moved it up into the boot, not sure if he changed to exhuast to a striaght back pipe, though. Sounds like a great idea to me.

Hi there...

It's a great idea and very easy to accomplish, here's the break down what needs to be done.

1. remove the original exhaust box(2) this will leave you with the more or less straight pipe
leading from the catalytic converter.

2. Remove the battery and asociated wiring, the orange fuse box needs a good tug uppwards to release.

3. Get a hold of either a plasma cutter, or a sawzall. Cut the battery box out...

4. meassure out how big of a aluminum plate you need. have it cut on a shear so it looks good.

5. get construction adhesive, steel rivets and a rivet gun.

6. spread the adhesive on the parameters of the opening, drill holes and rivet in the plate
it will look totally FAB.......

For the exhaust remember back pressure is a must so you could lose hp very easily. My recomendation
would be to go with a 24" Supertrapp exhaust that you can change the BP just by changing the amount of rings.

If you need some images of my installation or more help with the project, feel free to call me any time.

Have you done some comparisons with different numbers of disks? I believe that Garfield posted that he had the best numbers using all 8 of his disks (hence the lowest backpressure):

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13156

In another thread, he tried 6, 8, 10, and 12 disks and the 12 disks made the most power but slightly less torque than 10 disks.

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26074

In each of the above cases, the greatest number of disks (the least backpressure) made the most power.

Andy, thanks for posting those two links.

It's great to read the results of actual experiments.

Otherwise, it's an opinion, and I'd like to make decisions on experiments, not opinions.

Miniracer, I hope that your soon to arrive muffler is not a center/center type. If so, it will require a bend upward for a proper exit out the valence. If I recall correctly, you will need to go up about 3". My Borla Turbo center/offset got me in the ballpark, and from there the hangers got me properly centered...

One way to create more back-pressure is to pump more air  As the engine gets more powerful, the desire for more backpressure will be less and less, at least from what I have read. When I'm done with my engine mods, I'll dyno to see how I can optimize the hp/torque, give & take combo. If more back pressure is disirable, I'll do so at the cat to strike that fine balance. Adding back pressure afterwards is not that bad, adding more flow though requires planning from the beginning. If you go 2.5" and avoid the radical bends of the stock system, like with this "straight" approach, you'll have plenty of "room" to push this engine's output.

Good luck!

You need to read the SCC article carefully. They gained very little torque and lost 4 peak HP. You may wish to choose your components carefully. Frankly, the one-ball may be a better solution. Either way, good to see someone willing to try something different and unproven.
