Exhaust Questions/advice/opinions.

So as some of you may already know I am rebuilding my motor. For those of you who don't here is a link to My Build Thread.

Currently I have a fully open 3' catless system that will be going on until I find a muffler and/or resonator to add to it. This will be extremely loud. Now the problem is I don't know what to get. So I need your help. Some info you will need. It has to be 3' and I don't really want a prefabricated system. I plan to have a local performance shop make me a custom one. So I'm really only looking for muffler and resonators.

I may be shunned for this but there is no 4 banger that sounds as good as a STI. The Subaru "rumble" is caused by its unequal headers. Lucky us, we to have unequal headers, just on a much smaller scale. With a fully open exhaust we have a very faint rumble sound. Soooo, I really want to get my hands on a Subaru performance muffler and see how it sounds. But other than that I cant think of much. Any and all information would be appreciated.

This saddens me that I might have to be the person that scavenges up mufflers and tries them.

The distinct exhaust note of the flat 4 Subaru engine, is created by the 180° flat plane crank firing configuration between the left and right cylinders, and not due to the unequal header tube/pipe length.

While being partially true the unequal headers are a large part of it. Most subie people know when they upgrading to equal length headers they basically loose the icon subie sound. It is still there but much much less pronounced. You can you tube sound clips comparing to two for verification.

Thank you for your explanation and YouTube clip, however the distinct exhaust note is due to the flat plane 180° crank and the uneven cylinder firing sequence, furthermore you'll not replicate the Subaru's distinct exhaust note, with an inline 4 cylinder engine.

Maybe I should of been more clear with my writing. I know I will never be able to replicate the tone of the boxer engine. I believe you have a pretty modified car and you are always willing to help us on this side of the pond out. I believe you got PVC caps for me. If you have ever heard our car with a full straight pipe there is a slight rumble to it. Not like the flat ruble but still a rumble. I am trying to get a muffler that will help enhance the sound and not eliminate it.

I will help all I can, put up a YouTube clip of your un-muffled un-resonated exhaust, furthermore try looking at the resonance properties of mild Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium.

Just get an Invidia Q300 exhaust and call it a day. It has one of the best sounds out of MINI exhausts.

Magnaflow makes some very nice components. I'm sure you could find a 3" muffler and resonator that would give you a nice throaty rumble.
