I have heard more and seen alot of cars on here with the jan/rmw tune on here than the others. Was considering NM but not many have tunes from them.

I have watched Jan Tune cars and he is meticulous! He spots things that other shops might not, but if I was doing a hard tune I sure would want it done in person on a dyno.

Jan is located in Southern California, in the Long Beach area I believe.

And there lies the problem with Tunes done by a single entity rather than a group. If you lived there then it would be easy to get the car Tuned and the Tuned maintained by RMW.

I do not know if he will open an ECU when he is at a Track or Event of some sort.

Jan does travel. If you can get enough people together he will go to NY or anywhere else in the States.

You are correct! The problem is getting enough people to commit to a Tune! It is like herding cats to get people to commit to anything let alone spending about $500 and all be somewhere at a scheduled time and place. I tried, and succeeded with help, to bring Jan to the Pacific Northwest.

Jan was spot on when he says "bring a spare supercharger belt, injectors and spark plugs" as a minimum. All that stuff can be returned if you don't use it. If you have aftermarket mods that might interfere with the tune then you might not get it accomplished that same day. Check with Jan first about your mods.

Just got the word and wanted to share with you guys. Here's the email from NM:
Hello,*

Yes it is now finalized :-)

It cost $500 and that includes next day shipping going back to your location. We do the work and ship back to you the same day we receive the ECU.*

You can send the ECU to our location:

3300 Corte Malpaso
Camarillo, CA 93012
Attn: Jerry/Aaron

Along with the ECU, please include the vehicle's year/make/model, list of mods, and your info (name/address/phone #/email), vehicle usage (street only, occasional track day, a lot of track day, or dedicated track car). Also, If you are planning to install an intercooler, i recommend it being done first prior chipping the ECU.

Once it is ready to go back, we'll give you a call for the payment info.

I'm also putting together an instruction on how to remove and reinstall the ECU. Once i have it ready i'll shoot it over to you asap. Should be sometimes today.

Thanks,
Jerry T
NM Eng.

Automan that is probably the most exciting post I have read on NAM since owning my MINI. I however wish they could provide a re-flash if a dealer were to overwrite the tune or something of that nature. I have another year/15,000 miles before I am out of warranty and having the dealership re-flash my ECU and be out the $500 would be pretty miserable.

Any word on the tutorial he mentioned yet? Did you already order it? Wonder if he can provide more information on the process NM uses and what they found in testing. I know they were having issues previously with automatics so I wonder what the outcome was there.

Great seeing all these options become more of an reality.

Back up ecu is like $1400-$1500. The write up they speak of is just showing how to remove the ecu and that's soooo easy to figure out. I might get the back up ecu and then send that out to NM.

Don't forget if you get a backup ECu you need to have it coded to the car which is difficult and expensive.

If anyone cares, I asked NM if they can adjust the tune for not getting a cel with a catless do and hers their answer:

Unfortunately no. sorry. We are a California company and the state has strict rule with nasty fine if they catch us tempering with emission protocols :-(

Thanks,

. . . well, ain't that a bite in the butt . . . . Dang, dang, dang. Perhaps that explains why RMW did not remove the downpipe CEL with the 2011 MCS it recently tuned. I know RENNTech will do away with the downpipe CEL.

This is disappointing.

I spoke to them by telephone. They indicated depending on whether the customer wanted it, they could tune to have that CEL for downpipe use bypassed.

Annoucement lifted from RENNtech's web site -

* * * * *

RENNtech Tuning Now Available for Mini Cooper- Mark1 & 2!

RENNtech is pleased to announce that we now offer ECU upgrades for Mark 1 (2006-2010) and Mark 2 (2010-up) Mini Coopers. Our proprietary ECU tuning software was developed in house along side our BMW Tuning program and offers significant gains in performance for both the “S” and John Cooper Works (JCW) version Mini’s making an additional 45 HP and 40 lb/ft at the crank!

By modifying ignition timing and throttle mapping, optimizing air/ fuel ratios, increasing the top speed limiter and modifying boost mapping for turbo charged vehicles; our performance software will unleashes your Mini’s true potential without sacrificing daily driver reliability. On Mark 2 Mini’s, our ECU tune can be activated with the sport button allowing you to turn up the wick anytime via the push of a button.

Paired with an Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust system and optional down pipe for an additional gain of 8 Hp and 10 lb/ft your Mini will be small in size, but huge in performance!

That exhaust they offer is $1700+. And thats without the "optional" dp???. I dont mind paying the almost $1k for a tune that will give me a 40hp boost but no go for an exhaust that only gives 8hp. As soon as I get my FMIC Im calling Renn.

It also doesn't say if the ECU needs to be pulled or if it's an OBD port flash.
